I don’t think those cabinets are deep enough. If anyone is sleeping in the inside spot over the long-term storage they are going to be flipped in if the person on the outside edge suddenly gets out!

If you're wondering about the budget, in Amazon there are high beds available which are very affordable….you can even buy sliding drawers for underbed storage…. But this tip is only if you have very low amount of clothes.

Agree with everything (also the additional comment about slats for mattress airflow), but the rug. It's going to get in the way whenever you move the steps, which I imagine would be often since there's not much more storage space

Is it me or is the room too narrow to fit in the bed along its shorter side?

This size room with bed and desk, probably would have been better to buy one of those bunks-over-the-desk deals. Then the closet/cabinet on the wall he currently has the desk at.

My brother built a platform for his bed when he was a teenager so his desk was under it and he still had decent space.

But if you do the DIY fix wouldn’t you end up with your feet towards the door wall?

Hoping the suggestion will become the reality. It's so sad how small that room is. No one should live like that.

great idea if you don't weigh a lot haha, i wouldn't risk putting a plank on some furniture.

⭕️ Agree the most cost effective solution: if he plan to stay longer .

I used to sleep on an Ikea bunk-type bed with shelves and sliding doors underneath. Had the slats to prevent funky mattress as Cliff and other comments have suggested. Loved it except it was a behemoth particleboard monster on which I regularly stubbed toes and bashed elbows (reminded me of Cliff's furniture butt poking comment) 🤭. It wouldn't assemble or disassemble easily because it was so bulky and heavy, but certainly was durable! It lived at my parents some years after I moved out (partly because it couldn't be moved 😂). Now it's in storage waiting for it's chance to come out and shine again someday.
