  1. These are good tips. I actually acquired that 12" thickness planer from a friend who used and abused it until it broke. He disassembled it to do a repair, gave up, sent it my way in pieces. A $5.00 gear was all it needed plus a good cleaning. Some head scratching and figuring out the assembly later, it runs fine. As you said, it's a just okay machine. Yeah, save your money and buy the next size up, better grade machine.

  2. Not a fan of cordless compressors as I run everything from framing to trim guns. Oil less compressors dont last, buy a Rolair or a Hitachi, and you are set for life. Buy guns as you need them, but I prefer Hitachi, Senco or Grex depending on what Im doing. You can start cheap here because the cheap big box might just be good enough.
Im on board for pipe clamps, especially the Irwin ones you dont have to have threaded ends on.
A good palm sander is a life saver and easy to use, but a quality belt sander, can be a great tool in the right hands. Key word? Quality.
The DW735? Worth its weight in gold unless you have a big floor model.

  3. with the planer it’s the exact same thing i have an i have never run into any problems with it and i’ve run a lot of pine through it and a little bit a walnut

  4. Ugghh. I 'did' get that exact DeWalt Planer.
But, I've gotten pretty good use out of it, and … in a sense, … I do agree with you. SORTA.

  5. Great video. You are totally correct on so many things. The squaring clamps are just a royal pain and difficult to clean as well so I went back to pipe clamps – even when I built a solid hickory dining room table. Ya, glad to know about the battery powered nailer. I got also a pancake compressor and super happy with it. Did an entire flip house with it.

  6. For the planer…. I have the nicer dewalt.. you don’t need dust collection for it… just point it out the door and it will launch wood shavings 50 feet on its own.. mulch for your garden beds….

  7. I have the rigid nail gun. I like it, but I also have the paslode finish and framing nailers.. that my dogs hate, so I use the rigid inside when I have to.

  8. Table saw, dewalt 2 head planer, porter cable jointer, pocket hole jig, skil saw, router table done. Oh and no man is on tik tok. Stop that lol

  9. I agree with everything, with a small difference. The oscillating sander for my application (building guitars) is absolutely invaluable. But, it is a niche application. Outside of this, I can easily agree with this being on the list.

  10. Great video. I agree with everything you say, except maybe the oscillating sander. I have that particular one, and I use it frequently. But I'm not a beginner, and that's who you're talking about, so I'll concede the point. Also, I think a plug-in pancake compressor is more appropriate for most woodworkers. For those instances where I want freedom from the cord, I have an air pig, which can drive a ton of brads on a single charge.

  11. John, great video. I love your style and I'm a Steelers fan as well (except when they play the Giants). I've had the 12" DeWalt planer in my garage shop for about 8 years now… I've never popped the machine circuit breaker — I did pop my garage circuit breaker when milling hard maple… I "bought" mine with Amex points. Before I ever turned it on I built a cart for it. Also for the K-body clamps, the 48" Bremen clamps run about a buck an inch… and they rock. I'm gonna go with Bessey pipe clamps tho… I have a desktop I'll be gluing up, and I don't want to shell out more coin on clamps. Keep up the great work – love ur channel!!!

  12. Good video. And you are right, a lot of these tools are not the way to go for the beginner. Now, for the Rigid spindle/belt sander, I got it as a gift and it ha sbeen handy to used. I don’t use it a lot, but it is handy. On the Dewalt planer, I bought the lunchbox model at a price of I think $400, the next one, the 13” was $200 more. I had heard the lunchbox was a workhorse, so I had gone with it. Now, the 13” is only $50 more, when you compare prices at HD.

  13. Yep! Thank you Sir! I hate having bought my belt sander. I've only used it twice, in 3 years… and even then, I got frustrated with it both times. Thanks for the honest review of the K clamps, I don't own any, but WAS going to get some. I'll stick to my HF bar clamps. Love my 18 guage pneumatic brad nailer, my 23 guage pneumatic pin nailer, and pneumatic stapler! All very affordable and I use them all the time. And of course a compressor is a must have in my shop / garage. I regrettably bought a "universal" Kreg Trac kit to attach to my existing Skill circular saw, it absolutely sucks! Disappointed to hear about a hollow chisel mortiser, I really wanted one! ???? I agree with cordless tools, especially the palm sander. I stay corded with everything, except my drills. Also Disappointed to hear about the RIGID belt / drum sander, I really wanted to get one! (May get one anyway, ????) except I might just save the cash and get one from HF, since you said the RIGID broke 3 times. I have the exact Dewalt lunchbox planer that you mentioned. I like it, but the infeed and outfeed tables never stay level and flat.

  14. Also disagree with cordless sander. Use my Ryobi with big boy battery and hook my shop vac to it. No issues

  15. Disagree with the kreg jig. Ive used mine just fine. Without proper tools hard to get a straight line to make your own track
