A 100-year-old House Gets A Beachy Update

“Our clients live in the beaches neighbourhood of Toronto and wanted a Modern Farmhouse-meets-Beachy vibe at home”, says Maggie Burley, Interior Designer at Two Birds Design. To achieve an open and airy ambience, they removed interior walls and designed an open-concept kitchen in the centre of the house. The homeowners have young children, so kid-friendly design elements like shiplap walls and wood-look slate are ideal for high-traffic areas. Wait until you see the clever placement of the kitchen banquette and the spacious ensuite upstairs.

  1. Good job cleaning up and opening up the architecture… but seriously, why are you people so freaking scared of real color? And for the record, "modern farmhouse" is no longer in vogue… assuming it ever was. Do better. Thanks.

  2. I have an issue with house and home: everyone is white. Ive seen one black and one asian women.

And i love the content and quality of this channel. I am grateful for such a thorough channel with amazing editing skills that really allow you to feel the before and after and get a true sense of the big picture and small details of the interior designs but!!

Is it me or is 98% of the people they interview or the designers white?! As a woman of color, ive seen ONE black person and ONE asian person, everyone else is white. Is there no diversity in interior designers they can bring onto their channel? It just dawned on me today after watching this channel for six months (and watching videos from 3,5,7, and some 9 years back) that literally everyone is white. they really need diversity.

Thats my only con about this channel, what about the diversity of all walks of life especially for interior designers in Canada? More representation is needed.

  3. I really dislike TV’s mounted really high above fireplaces; it’s not a natural viewing angle. Unfortunately it’s very common but there are other solutions.

  4. "Modern farmhouse meets beach vibe." You ought to feel great, it's perfect imho!

  5. With a fireplace now in the back room, I would have removed the fireplace from the front room. With the new closet at the front door, there is just not enough breathing room in the front living room with the protruding fireplace. I also think the tall plain banquette just steels too much focus as you make your way out of the front door hallway. It also looks a bit weird to me how the island is closed at one end but not the other. Lastly it seems a shame to have so much of the floor to ceiling windows covered up by sofa in the new back living space. Like the new staircase and love the new front door which allows so much more light in the front hall.

  6. Curtains would be a nice touch to both give color, privacy and interest to this home.

  7. I love the way the new dinning room table and bench combo and how it provides separation to the kitchen. It defines that space very nicely while allowing for that nice open concept. Back room is inviting too! I am not crazy about the living room and its transition into the dining area. That area feels lifeless. I think everything else is a great improvement.

  8. A wonderful transformation! Now it's more functional and looks so fresh and spacious. Well done!

  9. I hope the home owners don’t get sick of the shiplap and trying to get around that shallow table at the end of the stairs. Shiplap is dated and over done while I know the pain of having a shallow table in on the side of a narrow walk way. It sucks and I’m very thankful to not have that anymore.

Not trying to be mean to the homeowners personal tastes but I’d like to see more color brought into these videos. To call that blue “saturated” is just a flat out lie to try and make it seem like there’s color in this home lol
