All the Tools I Got Free (and the ones I paid for)

Which tools did I pay for and which tools were given to me? Brought to us by Squarespace. For 10% off your first purchase, go to: http://squarespace.com/makesomething

A twist on the traditional woodworking shop tour. We go through one-by-one on the cost of each power tool and whether or not I paid for it. YouTube woodworkers tend to have big fancy shops with all the shiny new tools. I give my reasons and justify my tool choices and why my shop is so strange compared to a traditional woodworking shop.

  1. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It's not often you see this level of honesty and transparency. I've always enjoyed your content. It's fun, and it's accessible (mostly) (I don't have all the digital tools you have and I struggle with the Shaper Origin….learning that I suck at digital modeling….). I have learned a lot from you. I'm always hopeful you'll have a new project. They are truly inspiring. Not to copy, but to inspire some new project I can do. Go to the thrift store and pick up some cheapo thing, then remake it into something cool. What a great idea! The lamp was awesome. And so much fun. Thank you. Dan, nicely done on the videos! Looks great. 🙂

  2. Do not apologize. Luck is being in the right place at the right time. But… you put yourself in those places more times than not.

  3. Dang, was looking into the Rikon benchtop bandsaw….it has gone up in price!

  4. Dave, let me tell you… Until now I only got 2 tools for free: a TS100 soldering iron and a Makita hand drill… That my father took the the farm to use there and it ended up being stolen. ????
There's absolutely no shame or apology needed! I've been buying tools for the last year and a half now, for my workshop… But slowly I get there as well. So, I absolutely understand! ????
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! ????????

  5. Can you show more about your dust collection for the jointer and table saw, please.

  6. Did you get lucky or were you ready for opportunity when it arrived? Sounds like the latter to me. Well done, sir. Well done.

  7. Don't belittle yourself either, your accomplishments are yours. Some of us have enjoyed the transformation even all the way back from the drunken woodshop!! Now go make something

  8. David great video and thank you for the inspiration on I can build a better shop.

  9. The explicit focus on fun and creativity and SAFETY is why this channel is one of the few I drop everything to watch the second I see a new video.

For some reason there's a kind of cultish undercurrent on woodworking / diy / maker youtube that's obsessed with gatekeeping crap like fighting over what is "true" woodworking, "accessible diy", tools, etc. It's the same tendency you see in online games fandoms that tend to devolve into arguments over 'hardcore' vs 'casual' players. That's all just faff.

Dont worry about the BS, Keep being you! or to put it another way: "Have Fun, Stay Passionate and Make Something" 🙂

  10. The sum of the 'Total Paid' plus 'Total Given' is not a ton of money. Just ask a professional cello player, or professional tuba player. And let no one complain about spending a bunch on safety! You pay for safety now or sky high medical bills later. Way better to pay now! 'Cheeping out' on tools, gear, or equipment will only hold you back and make your job harder.

  11. re: luck. gary player, pro golfer said (paraphrase) "the harder i work at my craft, the luckier i get." luck means nothing without hard work and preparation

  12. Definitely one of the coolest shops on YouTube!

Honestly, I think it’s cool when you are able to leverage your influence to get tools.

  13. I want to know more about the. Dust Right dust collection under all the things. I need to figure out how to do that

  14. Great video! Too many people make really silly assumptions about our tools (and greatly over inflate their cost). Thanks for sharing and please keep taking us along your creative journey!

  15. My 'shop' is 4ft x 6ft and is shared with my heating/hotwater system so even a tool like a bench top drill press is too big. That does not stop me from watching your videos and getting inspiration. I watch you do stuff with all those fancy tools then sit down and try to work out how I can do that with seriously limited hand tools and skill levels. Most of the time I fail completely but boy do I have fun trying. For me those are the two most important points you made in this video – get inspired and have fun! As for the luck, well it goes both ways. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I get the impression that you accept both but don't rely on it.
At 65 years of age I'm never going to have any of those fancy tools or a big shop and I just don't care. I just want to make sawdust and have fun changing the shape of bits of cheap crappy wood 'cos that's what rocks my boat ????
Stay safe, have fun, be you and go feed those weinerdogs!

  16. David, damnit don’t apologize for anything given to you or that you have bought because what nobody understands (which they don’t need to) is you have worked your ass off for everything you have. I’m 64 and an old disabled cabinet and furniture builder. I wish I would have worried about my health. I have a small shop and I’m finally worrying about that. Since being on fixed income now, I discuss any tool purchase with my wife and I have finally bought my first Festool (no crappy comments back to me people) and it was the CT15 and the 125 sander. Absolute night and day from other sander and shop vac. I love being in my shop and my 33 year old daughter wants me to teach her. Anyway getting off topic. Be proud of your space and f everyone else. I wish a had your shop. Keep it up, this is why I watch, your dead truth honesty

  17. Also, Make Something can claim the tool purchases as business expenses, which helps.

  18. i feel you are out of touch with most woodworkers. great someone gave you a 10k laser. we are not the same

  19. "It's all about the safety", while standing at a table saw with the blade up and hitting your hand on it while making a video, lol. New subscriber here, enjoying the videos, looking forward to the new projects.

  20. It is a business you dreamed of and built… you succeeded – no apologies needed!

  21. Your shop looks like it was sprayed with ground up Elton John – and that's not a bad thing lol. Not my style but it's pretty cool.
