When i saw the pictures of folks straddling the narrow bench I legit gasped and said "OH that's why it's called a saw horse!"

  2. @preoco8241

That thing is originally designed as a long stool, the workbench function is a later use LOL.

Based on the photos from the book, I think you cut your legs too short to be an accurate build. The height in the photos look awkward to me, but I’m very particular about seat and bench height! I think the Chinese low workbench is supposed to be taller than the Roman low workbench. I don’t know why and only have the photos from the book to go on.

Edit: after looking at Granda Amu’s videos, I think the bench is taller because it is used both while seated on it and when sitting on other things. It looks like a compromise allowing use similar to a Roman low workbench and use as a totally separate workbench, that isn’t too low. The art I’ve seen of the Roman low workbench being used separately makes it look as low or lower than the knee.

hmm. you seem pretty tall compared to the average person in China in 1920. should the bench be (somewhat) proportionately larger to fit your much taller/wider frame?

  5. @diamondflaw

For the angled mortises, I was taught to use a spacer under the edge of the workpiece to slope it, and then chisel it out vertically. If you’re good at working vertical you can even add a spacer under the end too for a consistent compound angle to the legs.

Those guys were 4'9" and 115 lbs as adult males 100 years ago. "Small" is relative.
