Buying A Skid Steer Bush Hog. Rut Manufacturing Model SS-BM-60

A brush cutter for a skid steer is built differently than one for a tractor for good reasons, and they typically cost quite a bit more. I buy one, demonstrate its use, and go through the way it is built and why it costs more, plus I give a specific review on the model I bought.

  1. Bush hog or brush hog? There's not really any difference, it's just a regional thing and where I live everybody calls it a bush hog (which is actually a brand, kind of like calling tissues Kleenex.) Why put fences around the waterers? To make it hard to mow of course… No, actually it's so we can make the cattle walk under a back rub when they come to get water, which applies a permethrin fly repellent to their backs. Fly control is 100% necessary where I live. Why not an excavator mounted mulcher or flail mower? That would definitely be better in some areas, but overall it would be much slower when I just need to do simple mowing along the miles of trails and fence lines. I may get one of those in future though. Have an awesome weekend everybody!

  2. I would make a hydraulic motor cover like a ship going back and covering the lines as much as you can.
You'll get braver and want to do more until a dead sapling is at the correct angle so the top is pointing toward the cab.

  3. I'd suggest cutting back the fence lines in late August or early September every year as weather permits to knock down that years encroachment before the cold and snow really sets in…

  4. For the Fuel situation, I suggest buying (or building) a small trailer that's pulled by the ATV with a tank approx 50% larger than the largest tank any of your machines have that has either a small diesel powered pump (that feeds from the tank so it's completely self contained) or a small electric pump powered by a car battery that's recharged by a Solar Panel on top of the tank…

If you build it, we'd LOVE to see video(s) of you doing that…

  5. When comparing the tractor mounted Bushhog and the Skid Steer Bushhog, it doesn't really matter how much Horsepower the Skid Steer's Engine had, what matters is how much Horsepower the Hydraulic Pump has and how much oil it can push to the Attachments and ultimately, how much Horsepower the Bushhog's Hydraulic Motor has at 14 gallons of oil per minute at whatever PSI the Pump and Hoses can transmit vs. how much Horsepower/Torque the Tractor's PTO has…

  6. 15:44 I think it's more likely:

    Yah, I did miss you…

    But my Aim is Improving!!!

  7. That relief valve will also help protect the hydraulic pump/line on the skid steer if you hit something and jam the blade to a dead stop…

The fluid will still be able to circulate without blowing the line or overloading the pump…

  8. Maybe look into buying a used 300 gallon Propane Tank? Fill it with water of course, weld on some pipe fitting couplings, wheels, and a pull frame and ball hitch. WONDERBAR! A portable diesel fuel tank for the cost of a used tank, and some metal framing.

  9. I went back to your first videos to see how you started. Those first videos were a bit different πŸ™‚

  10. hi john,
once upon a time i did clearing professionally. we used a hydro-axe basically a loader with a giant brush hog. we would weld a taller cross bar on the front and weld chain to it hanging down and a couple horns on the side same as what comes from the factory but bigger. helps keep debris from shooting back and feeds trees into the blades

  11. None of my business I guess, but the trees on the front toe of the dam can cause more piping than those on the back toe. I would pluck those out with your "new" track hoe.

  12. Well, that right there is the cat's meow! My Granddaddy would've had one of those on his 40 Acre farm with a 2 acre pond on it. Lots of good memories down there.
