4 Levels of Paella: Amateur to Food Scientist | Epicurious

We challenged chefs of three different skill levels – amateur Onika, home cook Daniel, and professional chef Frank Proto from The Institute Of Culinary Education – to prepare a piping hot paella (yes, Frank finally gets to make paella!) Once each level of chef had served up their creation, we asked expert food scientist Rose to explain the choices each made along the way – both good and bad. Which paella would you pick?

DIY Miniature Stove From Bricks

DIY Miniature Stove From Bricks

Hello, everyone! Sammy continues to learn about Japanese culture. Recently, he learned a new recipe and really wants to cook it. So today we are going to make a fire craft! We will make a mini stove with a traditional wok!

We will need a lot of mini bricks, some concrete and a heat-resistant stand. Carefully lay out the bricks in the shape we show and secure them with the concrete. It is necessary to fill our stove with small stones. They will keep the heat in the stove well. By the way, our stove will be a perfectly real one! We will fill it with firewood and prepare a small dish. When the walls of the stove are ready, we need to make grout seams! This is so exciting! The stove will need a special concrete block, which we will put on the stove. We have prepared a special mold for it. And don’t forget about the wok!

Put some firewood into the stove and light the fire. Guys, you can also cook your favorite food in this stove! Just remember that it will be very small! Don’t forget to ask adults to help you! And what Sammy decided to cook for dinner, you will find out at the end of our video!

Bread Sauce – Simple Ways

Bread Sauce – Simple Ways

Bread Sauce ????

The final Christmas themed Simple Ways! A British classic. No need for the packeted stuff – make this from scratch and you certainly will not regret it. The PERFECT addition to a Christmas dinner and is so easy to do????

Ingredients:
Makes roughly 14-16 servings
1 litre whole milk
2 onions
25 cloves
2 bay leaves
15 peppercorns
Grating of nutmeg
350g breadcrumbs (staler the better – absorb more liquid)
75g unsalted butter
4 tbsps double cream
Salt & pepper to season

Method:
1. Add the milk, onions, cloves, bay leaves, peppercorns and nutmeg into a pan. Place on the hob until the milk is hot (not boiling). Remove from heat, cover with a lid and set aside for a few hours. Longer the better.
2. Once the milk has infused, remove the onions and spices from the milk. Blitz the onions in a blender then tip back into the milk and place onto a medium heat. Tip the breadcrumbs into the pan and cook for 15 mins until they have swollen in size and absorbed the milk. Make sure to keep stirring so it doesn’t stick. Add the cream and butter, check the seasoning and adjust where necessary, and there you have it, your homemade bread sauce! if you want it thinner, add some more milk and cook for a further 5 minutes, vice versa if you want it thicker add some more breadcrumbs. Enjoy!

How to Do a Double Leg Stretch | Pilates Workout

Watch more How to Do Pilates videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/505892-How-to-Do-a-Double-Leg-Stretch-Pilates-Workout

Double Leg Stretch is the second in the series of five. Each exercise builds off each other, so you can expect that the series will get a little bit more challenging as you go. And in this series, we focus on a concept called proximal to distal.

Proximal means like how Madeline is right now. Her knees are close to her chest. Her arms are under her chest. Your appendages are closer to your torso or your center. That keeps an exercise more supported or simplified. Distal means you take your arms and legs away from your center, and that’s quite a challenge. So that’s what we’ll look at in this exercise.

So right after Single Leg Stretch she’s on the mat, then curl up your head, neck and shoulders. Extend your arms toward your ears, and extend your legs out to 45 degrees parallel. Then circle your arms to your sides and hug the shins toward your chest.

Again, inhale deeply here through the nose. Exhale through the mouth as you hug the knees towards the chest. Keep going. Inhale and exhale. Circle the arms, and hug the knees in. Keep it up. Now if this is challenging for you, make the angle more proximal. That would be the arms up to the ceiling and the legs up to ceiling. Then circle the arms and come right back in.

One last time, Madeline. Inhale. Exhale. Come in. Scoop your abdominals. Then lower your head gently back down to the mat with control.

That’s Double Leg Stretch.

How to Make a Sling

How to Make a Sling

Full Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLALQuK1NDriPxpT5JB2gw-oNy10PUB8Y

Watch more First Aid videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/308-How-to-Make-a-Sling

Making a sling is a simple procedure, and it is very handy to immobilize an injured shoulder, arm, or collarbone.

Step 1: Cut cloth into square
Cut a large piece of cloth into a square that is at least 40″ on each side.

Tip
If necessary, dress any wounds or make a splint before putting the arm in a sling.

Step 2: Fold in half
Fold the cloth diagonally in half, forming a triangle.

Step 3: Place sling
Drape the triangle so its base runs up and down the chest opposite the injured side, with the top corner dangling over and behind the shoulder on the uninjured side, and the bottom corner hanging below the waist. The corner opposite the base should wrap part way around the waist, lying between the torso and the injured arm’s elbow.

Step 4: Support arm
Gently support the injured arm at the elbow across the torso.

Step 5: Drape corner
Lift the bottom corner up so the sling now cradles the injured arm. The hand should extend just past the base of the triangle and the elbow should be supported by the corner that’s opposite the base. Drape that same corner you just lifted over and behind the shoulder above the injured arm.

Step 6: Tie two corners together
Tie the two corners that are behind either shoulder to each other so they loop behind the neck, adjusting the knot so the elbow is bent at a right angle, not drooping low or pulled too high.

Tip
If you don’t have a piece of cloth available, use a long-sleeved shirt or sweater. Simply tie the sleeves together behind the neck and anchor the arm with the body of the shirt.

Step 7: Secure sling w/ cloth
To further immobilize the arm, wrap a long, thin piece of cloth around the body to keep the arm securely against the body.

Did You Know?
After his arm was shattered in a car accident, legendary guitarist Les Paul instructed surgeons set his arm at an angle, allowing him to continue to play.

How to Perfect the Elevator Pitch

How to Perfect the Elevator Pitch

Watch more Business Skills videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/297027-How-to-Perfect-the-Elevator-Pitch

If you happen to run into your ideal employer or business partner, in an elevator – or anywhere else for that matter – you’ll have about 30 seconds or less to wow them. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Brainstorm
Brainstorm a list of phrases that describe you and cross off any cliches or catch phrases. Keep only the most unique and honest statements.

Step 2: Craft a description
Craft a description of qualifications that you can share in 30 seconds or less.

Tip
Write the pitch like you speak. This will make it easier to deliver and make it sound more authentic.

Step 3: Practice
Practice your pitch on friends and family. Ask for feedback and adjust your pitch. It will become natural by doing it over and over.

Tip
Use a mirror to pitch yourself. If you can’t look yourself in the eye, how can you engage someone else?

Step 4: Make it about them
Make your pitch about the needs of your listener. Talk about the problems facing their industry that you are uniquely positioned to solve.

Step 5: Describe your value
Describe your value in solving these problems.

Step 6: Allow room for dialogue
Allow room for dialogue. Most people don’t like to be talked at, so be conversational and show an interest in them.

Step 7: Ask for something
Ask for something – a business card, a phone call, or permission to send your resume. The point of your pitch is to break the ice and generate interest, but you need to ask for the next step.

Hi. My name is Mike Patrick, and this is how to do the faro, weave, or dovetail shuffle. Generally speaking, it’s referred to as a faro shuffle. Faro was a really old game. It’s spelled FARO. The game isn’t really played anymore, but this was the shuffle that all the faro dealers used to use. You take half of the cards. Ideally speaking, you would do exactly 26. If you don’t care about it being a perfect shuffle for the purpose of a magic trick or something, it doesn’t need to be perfect. But what you do is you take 26 cards. You butt them against the other ones. My pinky is on the bottom. My ring and middle fingers of my left are along the edge, and my thumb is on the opposing edge. My index finger is curled to the bottom. This is a very secure grip.

These cards aren’t going anywhere, and it’s important for the following action. My other hand, I have my three fingers along this edge. My thumb is over here, and my index finger is on top. So if I put these against each other, there’s opposing force between this finger and my pinky on the other side. I align the cards. You don’t really need to do this too much, but you want them to be even. And I place them so that they’re next to each other. I tilt ever so slightly to the right this upper packet, and I allow them to weave into each other. This is mostly a pressure-based action. You’re going to have to do this a lot.

You’re going to butt the cards into each other, and they’re going to do this kind of thing and not shuffle properly. It’s going to take a lot of patience to be able to faro shuffle properly, but I will try my best to give you the best tips I can give. Again, the grip is like this. You place this one on top, and you allow the cards to slowly. . .I move towards myself as they’re weaving. This allows them to have a nice little action like so. When you’re doing perfect faro shuffles, there are two types. There are in faros, and there are out faros. An in faro is when the top card of the deck. . .We’ll turn it face up for clarity. The ace of hearts gets shuffled into the deck. So that means that the top card is now the second card.

Let’s correct that. It would now be the second card if these cards were perfectly mixed. That is called an in faro. If you want to do an out faro, it’s the same thing except for the fact that the top card of the deck stays the same. So if I do an out faro, and it was perfectly 26 on either side, you would have this kind of situation, where the top card remains the same. If you do eight perfect out faros, the deck will maintain its perfect order. So if you had a deck going ace through king all the way through and you did eight prefect shuffles, it will be back into new deck order. It’s a cyclical mathematical stack. But if you were to do in faros, you would need to do literally 52 of them to maintain the original stack. So it can be used in a number of magic tricks, but the main thing is to get your weave perfect.

This will take some serious time, but when you do it you can use it for things like giant fans, some mathematical card tricks, and the possibilities are more or less endless. There’s a ton of faro work out there. Have a great time.

Professional Baker Teaches You How To Make LEMON BLUEBERRY LOAF!

Professional Baker Teaches You How To Make LEMON BLUEBERRY LOAF!

Chef Anna Olson takes you from step 1 to step yum and teaches you how to bake this delightful fruit based loaf.

Subscribe for more video recipes: http://goo.gl/MJV4af

Ingredients

Cake

1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
Zest of 3 lemons
2 large eggs
½ cup (125 mL) half-&-half (10%) cream
1/3 cup (80 mL) vegetable oil
2 tsp (10 mL) vanilla extract
2 cups (300 g) all-purpose flour
2 tsp (6 g) baking powder
½ tsp (2.5 g) salt
1 cup (250 mL) fresh blueberries

Lemon Icing

2 Tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice
1 cup (130 g) icing sugar, sifted

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C). Grease and flour a 8 ½ -x-4 ½ -inch loaf tin and line the bottom and sides (just the long sides is fine) of the pan with parchment paper so that the paper comes over the sides.

2. Measure the sugar into a large mixing bowl and finely zest the lemons into it, whisking to stir in the zest (this draws out the oils). Whisk in the eggs, followed by the cream, oil and vanilla.

3. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt over the bowl and whisk until the batter is smooth. Gently stir in the blueberries and then pour this into the prepared pan and bake for 60-70 minutes, until a tester inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cool the cake for 20 minutes in the tin before removing to cool on a rack.

4. For the icing, whisk the lemon juice into the icing sugar by hand until smooth and flowing. Pour this over the cooled loaf and let a little drip over the sides. The loaf can be sliced right away, but letting it sit for an hour allows the glaze to set up for tidier slicing.

The loaf will keep, well-wrapped on the counter for up to 4 days.

Professional Baker Teaches You How To Make CRULLERS!

Professional Baker Teaches You How To Make CRULLERS!

Anna makes this classic German crullers recipe.
Click SHOW MORE for recipe ingredients and guide.

This makes about 24 crullers

INGREDIENTS
Choux Paste
¾ cup 2% milk
¾ cup water
1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
2 tsp sugar
½ tsp salt
1 ⅔ cup all-purpose flour, sifted
5 large eggs, at room temperature

Crullers
vegetable oil, for frying
icing sugar, for dusting

DIRECTIONS
Choux Paste
1. Bring the milk, water, butter, sugar and salt up to a full simmer over medium high heat. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the flour with a wooden spoon, stirring vigorously until the dough “cleans” the sides of the pot (no longer sticks). Scrape this mixture into a large bowl and use electric beaters or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat on medium speed for a minute or 2 to cool it a little.

2. Break two eggs into a small dish and whisk them just to blend a little. Add these to the flour mixture while still on medium speed and mix until blended. Add the remaining 3 eggs one at a time and mixing well after each addition.

3. Work with this recipe while the batter is still warm.

Crullers
1. Fill a pot with oil so that it is about 2-inches deep, but comes up to only a third the height of the pot. Heat this to 350 F (use a candy/fryer thermometer to measure) or use a tabletop fryer following manufacturer instructions.

2. Fill a fabric (not a disposable plastic) piping bag fitted with a large star tip with the choux paste (you may have to fill in multiple batches). Pipe circles on small pieces of lightly greased parchment paper and gently slide them into the oil trying not to splash, removing the paper. You can also flip the piped crullers onto a slotted spoon and lower them into the oil.

3. Cook the crullers for about 5 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking. Lift the crullers out with a slotted spoon or straining spoon and place them on a paper towel lined plate to cool. Dust with icing sugar and serve immediately.

How to Do the Wind Relieving Pose

How to Do the Wind Relieving Pose

Full Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLALQuK1NDrjAUHw4GgGBDdXzH5ka3Il7

Watch more How to Do Yoga Poses videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/243-How-to-Do-the-Wind-Relieving-Pose

The Wind Relieving Pose stretches the lower back, sure, but as its delicate name suggests, it has one main goal. . . meaning you might want to think twice about practicing this one in the office.

Step 1: Lie on back
Lie in a comfortable position on your back.

Step 2: Wrap arms around knee
Exhale, bending your right knee up to your chest and wrapping your arms around your shin.

Tip
For an extra stretch in your back, have a brave friend gently push your shin into your chest.

Step 3: Press into mat
Press your back, shoulders, and the back of your neck into the mat, keeping your spine long.

Step 4: Bring forehead to knee
Exhale, and bring your forehead toward your knee.

Step 5: Breathe deeply
Breathe deeply for several breaths.

Tip
For a more “relieving” pose, place your hands on your knee and press them into your chest on each exhale, then straighten your arms to move your knee away from your chest on each inhale.

Step 6: Release pose
Release the pose by dropping your foot to the mat.

Step 7: Repeat pose
Repeat the pose with the left leg, holding for the same number of breaths as you did with the right leg.

Step 8: Release pose
Release the pose by dropping your feet to the mat. What a relief.

Roman Emperor Claudius passed an edict that proclaimed ‘citizens shall be allowed to pass gas whenever necessary.’

How to Quiet Noisy Water Pipes

How to Quiet Noisy Water Pipes

Watch more Home Repair & DIY videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/310630-How-to-Quiet-Noisy-Water-Pipes

Noisy water pipes may seem daunting, but you can often fix the problem at its source.

Step 1: Fix banging noise
Lower your water pressure at your main water line if you hear a banging noise when you turn off a faucet. The banging is the result of a shock wave moving along the water line.

Tip
Consider installing a pressure-reducing valve with the pressure set no higher than 60 psi if you hear banging.

Step 2: [Solve creaking or cracking noise
Place insulation around a noisy water pipe if you hear a creaking or cracking sound when you use hot water. Copper water pipes expand when hot water passes through them, causing them to rub against wooden framing and support brackets.

Step 3: Fix whistling noise
Replace the washer or repair the faucet valve seat if you hear a whistling noise coming from a faucet. Whistling is caused by water passing through a restricted area.

Step 4: Quiet a rattling noise
Cushion the water pipe or strap it down if you hear a rattling sound. Rattling is due to poorly secured water pipes.

Did You Know?
The first American waterworks, which were built in Boston in 1652, used pipes made of hollow wooden logs.

Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music

SUMMARY:
– Liopleurodon was a giant marine reptile from the family of short-necked plesiosaurs. This species lived during the Callovian stage of the Middle Jurassic Period. The typical size of a Liopleurodon varied from 16 to 23 ft, but the largest reached over 33 ft.
– Arthropleura lived in the territories of current northeastern North America and Scotland about 315 million years ago. The species ranged from almost one to 7 ft in length and were around 2 ft in width. Arthropleura’s body was apparently composed of around 30 jointed segments covered by 2 side plates and one center plate.
– Megalania is the biggest monitor lizard you can possibly imagine. The youngest of its fossils dates back to approximately 50,000 years ago. The length of the largest Megalanias reached around 23 ft with a maximum weight of 1,320–1,370 lb. They were unbelievably active hunters.
– Dunkleosteus became extinct about 358–382 million years ago during the Late Devonian period. However, there wasn’t just one Dunkleosteus — there were actually 10 species of it, including D. terrelli, D. denisonii, and D. magnificus. D. terrelli, the largest of them, was almost 20 ft long. Most Dunkleosteus fossils were found in North America, Poland, Belgium, and Morocco.
– Jaekelopterus was a giant predatory sea scorpion Scientists confirmed that Jaekelopterus reached a size of nearly 8.5 ft, which makes it the largest arthropod ever.
– Sarcosuchus, a distant relative of living crocodiles, lived about 112 million years ago. It had somewhat telescoped eyes and a long snout with 35 teeth on each side of its upper jaw and 31 teeth on each side of its lower one.
– Gorgonopses lived around 260 million years ago, terrifying all the smaller species of that time. As for their size, these creatures were about 10 ft long and weighed nearly 1,000 lb. They were basically at the top of the food chain.
– Titanoboa lived in the region that’s now a part of northeastern Colombia, and its fossils date back to about 58–60 million years ago. Titanoboa holds the scary record for the largest snake ever discovered with a total length of nearly 48 ft and a weight of about 2,500 lb.
– Meganeuropsis still continue to be the biggest insect of all time with a wing length of 13” and a body length of almost 17”. The very first fossils of Meganeuropsis were actually discovered in France back in 1880.
– Helicoprion lived was around 290 million years ago, living in North America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Australia’s waters. The most distinctive feature of Helicoprion was its circular jaw. Helicoprions proved to be incredibly strong since they survived the Permian-Triassic Extinction Event that killed 90% of marine animals and around 70% of terrestrial ones.
