How To Drill A Well

Ok so what’s going on here and what’s all over the ground?
We’re getting ready to build a house on 5 acres and the first thing we want to do is drill a well.
It’s hard to budget for the cost of a well because you don’t know how deep you must go to get water, so I like to get this out of the way early.
The guys grabbed 20-foot sections of drill rod our of the carousel and thread them onto the previous piece.
They use non-polluting grease on the threads, so they won’t seize.
This rig uses 350 PSI of air to power a pneumatic rotary hammer to drill into the bedrock.
At 160 feet we hit a lot of water- Here’s how they measured the gallons per minute: They created a damn around a section of PVC pipe so they could fill a one-gallon container with water.
We timed how long it took to fill- 2 seconds. 60 seconds divided by 2 seconds is 30- that meant we had 30 GPM.
I made this drawing to explain how it went- They hit bedrock at 20 feet down, at this point they put in a piece of steel casing.
They drove the casing into the bedrock to make a seal. The casing keeps surface water from leaking into the well.
Next, they drilled down to 160 feet where they hit a lot of water- this company always drills a minimum of 200 feet, in case there’s a drought, we’re more likely to still have water.

Chetna Makan's Coconut Curry Leaf Prawns With Peanut & Coriander Chutney | At Home | Waitrose

Cookbook author Chetna Makan makes coconut curry leaf prawns with a peanut & coriander chutney from her latest book.

Great as a sharing snack, these deep fried, crispy prawns have a balance of sweet and spicy flavours. If you can, keep the tails on the prawns as they’re perfect to hold onto when dipping into the fresh, zingy chutney. The chutney goes perfectly in sandwiches and salads too.

As part of our At Home series, we’re welcoming some special guests to our channel from their home kitchens. In each episode they’ll share the recipes they love to cook, what inspires them and their favourite ingredients.

Ingredients:
8 raw shell-on king prawns
30g plain flour
1 British Blacktail Free Range Medium Egg
30g desiccated coconut
1 large clove garlic, roughly chopped
10 fresh or dried curry leaves, finely chopped
¼ tsp chilli powder
¼ tsp salt
Sunflower oil for frying

For the coriander peanut chutney
(dhania moongphalli chutney)
30g roasted unsalted peanuts
2 green bird’s eye chillies
2 cloves garlic
1 small onion, roughly chopped
1 tsp caster sugar
½ tsp salt
2 x 25g packs coriander, leaves only, roughly chopped
½ lime, juice
25g pack mint, leaves only, roughly chopped

Huevos Divorciados

Ingredients:
– 8 corn tortillas
– 8 eggs, fried
– 4 tomatoes, cut in half
– 3 white onions, peeled and halved
– 3 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
– 3 dried pasilla chillies, deseeded
– 700g (24.6 oz) tin of tomatillos
– 1 jalapeño
– 1 bunch of coriander (cilantro)
– juice of 1 lime
– 120g (4.2 oz) pinto beans, soaked overnight
– 1 bay leaf
– salt to taste

Method:
1. For the salsa roja, add the tomatoes, two of the onion halves, and the garlic to a dry pan over high heat. In a separate pan, toast the chillies for 1–2 minutes until fragrant, then place them in a jar and cover with boiling water to soak.
2. Once the tomatoes, onions, and garlic have a nice dark char, transfer them to a food processor. Add the soaked chillies along with the water they were soaked in. Blitz to your desired consistency—I prefer it a little chunky. Season with salt, and set aside.
3. For the salsa verde, drain the tomatillos and place them in a blender with the jalapeño, 80% of the coriander (saving some for garnish), the lime juice, and a pinch of salt. Blend to your desired consistency, then refrigerate both salsas until ready to use.
4. To cook the beans, place the soaked beans in a pressure cooker or pot along with the remaining onion half, bay leaf, and a big pinch of salt. Cook in the pressure cooker for 25 minutes, or simmer in a regular pot on low for about 1.5 hours, until tender. Once cooked, mash the beans with a potato masher and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
5. Toast your tortillas in a hot, dry pan, and fry the eggs. Place the tortillas on plates, top each with a fried egg, and surround each egg with the two different salsas. Serve with some mashed beans on the side and garnish with fresh coriander. Enjoy!
