NEVER TOO SMALL: Designer Couple’s Simple Luxe Apartment, Amsterdam 33sqm/355sqft

Designers Carla and Bruno, the talented couple behind Hum Gallery & Studio, completely transformed their standard T-shaped apartment with a unique blend of hotel aesthetics and simplicity, using a mix of second hand furniture and natural materials. Key to the overall design was taking advantage of the apartment’s natural light and views overlooking the courtyard. The biggest change to the floorplan was opening the bathroom up into the bedroom, incorporating a large bathtub, vanity and shower into the space. They also removed the original L-shaped corner kitchen and extended it along the full length of the wall, where it forms part of the open plan living and dining space. The area is centred around a custom made dining table and pendant light, with a unique mirror based vintage sofa tucked into a small cosy nook. With the upgrade of this 1901 apartment, Carla and Bruno have created the perfect canvas to feature all of the objects that they have collected over time.

Isaac & Polly met in Honduras while working as scuba diving instructors on short-term work visas. As their time in Honduras ended, they weren’t ready to say goodbye to each other quite yet & decided to travel back to the U.S. to build out a box truck together. Once they arrived in the U.S., they only had 90 days to find a van, build it out, & make it to the Mexican border before Isaac’s visa ended. Although they did the build quickly, this box truck turned out absolutely stunning. Their build features a kitchen, pop-up table, bench seat, & a double bed with storage underneath for all of their scuba diving gear.

Texas style brisket on an offset smoker. The Texas BBQ cooked the old school way by a Texan. Wood, fire & meat. No shortcuts, no electronics, no gimmicks. Just patience. And maybe a fair amount of cold beer….

In this recipe and video we smoke brisket on my Mill Scale 529 gallon offset smoker. However, this recipe can be replicated on a pellet smoker, kamado, kettle or any sort of cooker than you have with an indirect cooking as well.
Why is the smoker named Geraldene? The first people I cooked for on this smoker were Miranda Lambert, Jon Randell & Jack Ingram. Together they wrote the song Geraldene. These lyrics from the song are bolted on the smoker “You’re trailer park pretty, but you’re never gonna be Jolene.”

GERMAN POTATO SALAD with a warm bacon vinegar Dijon dressing!

German potato salad is a no-mayo, vinegar-based potato salad that’s traditionally served warm. Baby red potatoes are gently tossed with a tangy, and savory bacon Dijon dressing that’s seriously amazing. It’s perfect for potlucks, parties, barbecues, and of course, Oktoberfest!

Whenever I want to switch up my classic potato salad routine— this authentic German potato salad with a tangy sweet dressing is a wonderful alternative. It’s perfect for when you’d like a vinegar-based, no-mayo potato salad, but with extra oomph. And that’s all thanks to the deliciously warm bacon vinaigrette, similar to the bacon Dijon dressing in my favorite sautéed carrots recipe.

I first enjoyed German potato salad (many times over) when I lived in Heidelberg, Germany in college, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Traditionally, this “meat and potatoes” recipe combines baby red potatoes with ham or speck (German bacon) and it’s served warm. But I think it’s equally tasty served cold for potlucks and summer cookouts!

Studio McGee Spec Home Tour: A Closer Look at All the Bedrooms & Bathrooms #SMSpecHome

We all know in our own homes the bedroom is much more than a place to lay your head. It’s the place where you reflect on the day before sleep and a place where you plan for the day just after waking up. It is the space where you recharge physically and mentally. It is perhaps one of the most important spaces in the home.

Starting in the primary bedroom, Shea explains “the goal in here was to keep it serene but honor the rustic nature of the rest of the home.” Playing up the rustic side of those is the wide wood paneling running the height of the walls and across the ceiling. The wood features lots of character with knots and holes, “we didn’t want it to be smooth, clean, and modern,” Shea adds. A thin layer of Natural Tan in Sherwin Williams amplifies the character of the wood by not masking the flaws. “You’re getting the softness from the light, putty color and getting the rustic texture coming through.” Exposed wood beams were custom stained to match the ceilings in the great room.

McGee & Co.’s linen-draped Henrietta Bed was the perfect companion to the space, though with the soaring ceilings the headboard didn’t measure up. “We added large-scale artwork above it in a pair and it perfectly fills that space,” Shea explains. “If you’re working with a bed that has a lower height, you can fill the height visually with artwork above.”

The drapes in the primary bedroom are a shade off of the wall color, creating a beautiful tonal moment that’s a “calming feeling,” explains Shea. The Shade Store drapes are Linen Flat Roman in Natural on the smaller windows flanking the bed and Linen Tailored Pleat in Natural on the larger windows.

One last tip from Shea before we move into the primary bathroom. “I often see people place their rugs in their bedrooms way too close to the nightstands. The goal is to fill and ground the room. When you pull the rug down, you give more visual interest at the foot of the bed which makes your room appear larger,” she explains.

Smashed cucumber salad is simple and can be prepared in no time. You don’t even need to turn on your stove. If you want to make this salad ahead of time, keep the cucumber and the dressing separate in the fridge and mix them right before serving. This is the best cucumber salad because the smashing creates many bruises and allows the seasonings to infuse into the cucumber.

INGREDIENTS
350 grams of cucumber, smashed
3/4 tsp of salt
2 cloves of garlic, grated
2-3 pieces of Thai bird eye chilies, diced
2-3 tbsp of diced cilantro, diced
1 tbsp of soy sauce (Amazon Link – https://geni.us/light-soy-sauce)
1 tbsp of Chinese black vinegar or apple cider vinegar (Amazon Link – https://geni.us/chinese-black-vinegar)
1 tbsp of hot chili oil
1/2 tsp of sugar
1 tsp of sesame oil (Amazon Link – https://geni.us/roasted-sesame-oil)

INSTRUCTIONS

Smash the cucumber with a heavy-duty cleaver until the cucumber starts to split along the length. Then cut the cucumber diagonally into 2 inches long pieces. If you don’t have a cleaver, please use a rolling pin, a meat tenderizer, or your fist. It is best to use cucumbers that have thin skin and tender seeds; otherwise, you have to remove the seeds and peel the skin for better texture.

Season the cucumber with salt for 15 minutes to draw out some moisture. Then, squeeze the cucumber and discard the excess liquid.

To make the dressing, combine the grated garlic, cilantro,Thai bird eye chilies, soy sauce, hot chili oil, vinegar, sugar, and sesame oil.

Mix the cucumber with the dressing and toss thoroughly. For authenticity, we use Chinese black vinegar. However, considering it is not easy to find outside China, apple cider vinegar will be the best option as the slight fruity flavor accomplishes the cucumber well.

No Bake Coffee Slices
Recipe in English:

Ingredients:
Prepare No Bake Cake:
-Digestive biscuits 450g
-Cocoa powder 1 tbs
-Instant coffee 2 tbs
-Hot water 2 tbs
-Nurpur Butter salted 100g
-Condensed milk 250ml
-Vanilla essence ½ tsp
-Badam (Almonds) chopped 1/3 Cup
Prepare Coffee Frosting:
-Nurpur Butter salted 100g (room temperature)
-Icing sugar 1 & ½ Cup
-Cream 2 tbs
-Instant coffee 1 tbs

Directions:
Prepare No Bake Cake:
-In a chopper,add digestive biscuits,process until finely crushed & set aside.
-In a small bowl,add cocoa powder,instant coffee,hot water,mix well & set aside.
-In a wok,add butter & let it melt on low flame.
-Remove from flame,add condensed milk,cocoa & coffee mixture,vanilla essence & mix well.
-Add almonds,crushed biscuits & mix until well combined.
-Transfer the mixture to a 7 x 7-inch baking dish lined with butter paper,spread evenly & refrigerate for 15 minutes.
Prepare Coffee Frosting:
-In a bowl,add butter & beat well until color changes.
-Gradually add icing sugar & beat well until creamy.
-In a bowl,add cream,instant coffee & mix well.
-Add coffee mixture in a bowl & beat well.
-On a cake,add & spread prepared coffee frosting.
-Carefully remove cake from baking pan,cut into bars,garnish & serve!

-Karahi mein makhan dal dein aur halki ancch per melt ker lein.
-Chulhay sa hata lein,condensed milk,cocoa & coffee mixture aur vanilla essence dal ker ache tarhan mix karein.
-Badam aur crumbed biscuits dal ker ache tarhan mix ker lein.
-7 x 7-inch baking dish lined with butter paper per mixture dal ker evenly pheela lein & 15 minutes kliya refrigerate ker lein.
Prepare Coffee Frosting:
-Bowl mein makhan dal dein aur color change ho janay tak ache tarhan beat ker lein.
-Thora thora ker ka icing sugar dal ker creamy ho janay tak ache tarhan beat ker lein.
-Bowl mein cream aur instant coffee dal ker ache tarhan mix ker lein.
-Coffee mixture ko bowl mein dal ker ache tarhan beat ker lein.
-Cake per tayyar coffee frosting dal ker pheela lein.
-Cake ko carefully baking pan sa nikal lein,bars mein cut ker lein aur garnish ker ka serve karein!
