I do the sidways cuts first when spliting the onion in half as i remove the skin and remove if before bringing it to the chopping board. And then do the 0.5 cm cuts.
Test without the horizontal cut . It’s the same

I do similar, except I peel and then cut my horizontal slits while it's still a whole onion. Allows me to keep all cuts aimed down towards the cutting board.
