I tried all the ways. The only way that works is the microwave way. take out and stir, and put back in over and over.

I put the unwrapped butter in the metal bowl of my stand mixer, since it's where it will end up anyways, and put it in the sink that I've filled with a bit of warm water.

I heat water in the microwave for 90 seconds, then put the butter in the microwave. Works for a full pound of butter.
