Can exercise make you smarter??

A 2009* study conducted by the University of Illinois and published in Neuroscience revealed intriguing results about the impact of exercise on the brain (Yes, I made an error in the video – it’s 2009, not 2019).

In the experiment, researchers measured the effects of 20 minutes of moderate exercise (walking on a treadmill, at 60% of estimated maximum heart rate) versus 20 minutes sitting quietly.

The outcome?
Brains scans showed noticeable changes in brain activity between the two groups. The group that exercised had increased cognitive control, attention, and focus which led them to perform better on a comprehension test.

Here’s what the researchers had to say:

“Single, acute bouts of moderately-intense aerobic exercise (i.e., walking) may improve the cognitive control of attention… These data suggest that single bouts of exercise affect specific underlying processes that support cognitive health and may be necessary for effective functioning across the lifespan.”

The lesson?
Exercise can be considered a performance hack for the brain!

Whether you’re experiencing mental fatigue and need an energy boost, or need to sharpen your focus and tap into your cognitive potential, a brisk walk might be the ideal performance-enhancing solution.

Do you find that you’re able to focus better after exercise? ????

• In the video I mistakenly said 2019. The study was from 2009. Reference below:

  6. The ending was gold.
    Funny, unexpected, but on-brand.
Her content is always excellent (the 2009 mistake humanizes her) and doesn't need juvenile graphics. Brava!

  7. It could be a great insight for all the parents in India. Children's are force to study for hours and sport or outdoor activity is frowned upon. I personally faced it as well.

  8. Shade, i got the true meaning of cognitive when you spoke of 2019 and I saw 2009 in the video display.
