Drawing Helps You See the World

The German philosopher Goethe said, “I have not seen what I have not drawn.” Drawing is a very helpful way to see the world, clarify it, engage it, put our attention to it, and focus on it.

This month, I am doing a 30-day drawing challenge with my drawing students. I wanted to share a few of the drawings in this video. Although they’re almost finished drawings, I view them as compositional studies for paintings. I share drawings of landscapes, interiors, and figures. They just have a way of helping you orchestrate and see the world before you begin to paint.

I used Blackwing Matte pencils and Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper for the drawing.

  1. That wide pencil lead is created by sanding the pencil lead on a piece of fine sandpaper on the angle you naturally hold the pencil to draw. That creates a flat chisel surface.

  2. I really enjoyed this video , though to be honest I really enjoy them all! Your timing was perfect as I was sketching a landscape at the time. Thank you for all you do to make us better artists

  3. I am very interested in how to simplify complicated objects, such as the adobe wall on the left. Specifically, I've been thinking about how to paint a wooden cart full of oranges, and I don't know how to simplify the hundreds of oranges. I hope you will make a video on something like that in the future. Thanks!

  4. Absolutely inspiring. YES, I would love to see more videos on drawing. I feel freer now to try and to put the pencil to the pad to getting started. Thank you

  5. So useful and we'll explained. I learned a lot watching this process. So, yes others videos of this kind would be very useful. (And we can't wait to see the finished painting of course).

  6. Thanks, as always inspirational, I always try to draw everything and get frustrated, love your drawings, have your Xmas Drawings printed and on my art studio wall as inspiration thanks Ian

  7. Just so you know, I find your videos so helpful. Sometimes it seems overwhelming when first starting a painting, trying to understand what’s in front you you. Doing the drawing first absolutely appeals to the way my brain works. So thank you for helping us!

  8. Hi, Ian. I have a weird question to ask. Do you happen to make clocks? Really intricate clocks using the Raku technique? I have heard of an artist with the same name as you and I was curious if there was a connection or if it was just a cool coincidence. Great video by the way. You're always so informative

  9. Yes, please, more videos! This is the skill I have been missing for decades. I usually paint more abstractly, but the composition in my mind is constructed like this. I would like my mind-skills and hand-skills to match my eye-skills during my lifetime.
