  1. THANK YOU LISA!! I've just done.a major home design and refused to mount the TV high because it was unhealthy. How on earth are those so-called "interior designers" on HGTV missing this. I've opted for a cabinet and just a 55" set because it's balanced for the space and have built-in cabinets to store all DVD media – out of sight because I live in a home – NOT BLOCKBUSTER.

  2. I only have one wall in my living room to hang a TV. One wall has a large picture window, one side is open to the dining room, and the back is a staircase railing. The fireplace spans the entire width of the living room. So the TV has to be centered above the fireplace. This is why I like reclining sofas.

  3. A friend of mine is a very tactile learner. Things on a computer don't mean anything to him. He actually had Legos and Lincoln logs and that is how he did a layout for each room in his house. It worked beautifully. And it was a lot of fun to build furniture and Legos 🙂

  4. The reason guy's mount their TV's too high is the fact that their necks are frozen from being too long at the sport bars. { Lisa your rule for height also goes for hanging art.} Thanks for another fun video ❣

  5. Love and find your videos so informative ! I know this has been asked before … can you style 2 rugs for example a sisal on the bottom and a Turkish on the top . I crave pattern .

  6. I’ve heard other designers say as long as the front legs of the sofa and chairs are on the rug it’s ok.

  7. Hi Lisa. Please make a video dedicated to that dreaded TV issue. There’s always a fireplace competing for the space in the family room. I don’t know what to do. How should the perfect family room be built to accommodate a large enough screen TV AND a fireplace?

  8. Hi, Lisa, I want to sign up your design club, how to find the coupon code for yearly sub?

  9. What is your (or anyone reading this) opinion on using 2 rugs staggered on top of each other instead of just one rug? I’ve seen it in DIY shows.

  10. Lisa this is so helpful to have all these fixes in one video! I've watched a lot of your videos, created playlists for specific categories and I still mess something up–the wrong color, the wrong size, the wrong style… This is a great video! Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

  11. I DO NOT agree that TVs should always be mounted low. It all depends. People that claim TVs mounted higher will hurt your neck are just repeating boilerplate advice, much like don't swim after eating. For one thing, you can mount the TV with a downward angle. In any case, IMO is it is quite comfortable to lounge in a living room close to a higher TV because it is often MORE comfortable to watch TV with your head tilted back a little. With a low TV you need to sit up straighter on a comfy couch (who does that after work?) or tilt your head down if you're reclining. People often watch TV while reclining.

Also, with modern floor open floor plans you can view the same TV from short to large distances. The one preparing a meal will watch it standing in the kitchen, often over a high bar. And it may be mounted on a very high wall. It would look very strange and be impractical to have a low mounted TV in this case.

The advice to always mount a TV low is especially out of date now that there are TVs that do double duty as displaying art, as with the Samsung Frame, and indeed look like a picture frame. It all depends on what you consider the TV to be. Do you conceive of it as a picture on the wall that fits , or as merely a display device to sit down and watch TV shows? Is your style contemporary or traditional?

  12. Lisa I’d love it if you would do an episode just on ways of hiding the tv when it’s not on ….????

  13. What a great fix for the rug size & shape issue! Thanks. And we all know almost no one wants to sit in the front row of a movie theatre because of that very neck issue. People forget that table heights & TV placements need to be scaled for people usage.

  14. controversial opinion: I hate low living room tables. I don't want to reach down and fall off my couch to reach my mug or snacks and I don't want them to be the same height as my dog eather. My table is an inch or two higher than the seating height of my sofa and I like it that way 🙂

  15. It's perfectly acceptable to have back legs of furniture off the rug. Disagree with Lisa on this one.

  16. The room at the 4 minute mark has an "epic fail" area rug, at least according to your first rule.

  17. Lisa, Great video. I use Excel to lay out my room & then I measured every piece of furniture & put that in Excel as well. Now, before we rearrange, we already know if it will fit. As a young girl / teen, I did use graph paper.
