Framing A Fireplace For Our New House

I’m going to frame the fireplace for our new house right here.
First, I marked all the measurements on the floor, this fireplace is 2 feet deep and 7 feet wide.
My wife ordered a modern linear gas fireplace.
We wanted it up off the floor, so I built a 6” box platform for the unit to sit on.
Then, I built the two side walls- these are 14 feet tall.
I used a laser to transfer the marks from the floor up to the trusses above. This way I knew exactly where to put the walls so they would be plumb.
I put a piece of ½” OSB at the top for fire blocking and then added another in the middle later on.
Next, I framed in the firebox opening with jacks on the right and left side and a header on top.
I added two more jacks and another header above this to create a recessed area for a TV.
Finally, I installed studs at 16” on center above these openings for drywall.
About this time the New Guy came back from his break and started barking orders at me.
I had totally forgot I needed to put a piece of ¾” plywood behind the TV recess.
This will give us something to mount the TV to without getting in the way of the fireplace vent pipe.
Let me know if you want to see the stone veneer and custom mantle installed. @hausplans

  1. Sorry but you don't build a fireplace with wood. Wood is what you burn inside a fire place. What you made there is a fancy gas nightlight!!! Stop lieing to yourself

  2. You know why I watch this? Its the chance to see the new guy and the occasional scriptures.

  3. Looking good. Did you remember plate poly behind your build out? Or going to spray foam it?

  4. Build shelving into the sides before you close it up!! Wasted space!

  5. Thank God for the new guy, he saved you from making a mistake. I think that he will make manager.

  6. Two flat-stacked 2x4s are not a header; they're just two flat-stacked 2x4s. 2x lumber needs to be vertical to have the strength to qualify as a header. Even if you peppered the flat 2x4s with nails, it wouldn't hold nearly as much weight as proper headers.

  7. Love the new guy. Doing the same here in a new build but it’s a small home/room and I’m still not sure the flat screen is going up there. Leaving my options open. I watch very little TV and I don’t want it to be the focal point.

  8. great job! I would install a low voltage box with some smurf tubing going from behind the tv to wherever your cable box/gaming consoles are for cable management
