In this video, I’m testing a method I’ve been curious about for a while: growing a tomato plant upside down. While I usually have plenty of room to grow tomatoes right side up in my garden, this idea is perfect for anyone working with a limited space. I’ll show you, step by step, how to set up an upside-down tomato plant using just a few simple supplies. Let’s see how this experiment goes.

I don't understand the benefit of this vs just using the bucket right side up. I mean I guess you can hang it, but that's the only thing? And hanging comes with its own set of issues vs just having a bucket on the ground. Seems like it would be a pain not just to assemble, but also to take down when done.
Congrats!! 🎉🎉
This is useful for me
hm … contender beans might grow well up top too.
Lol thank you for this video! I’ve heard of this technique but was always too lazy to actually try and see what(if any) benefits it actually had. Part of the reason I love this channel is whenever I think, “I wonder what’d happen if I tried _ with my garden this year?” – there’s usually a video on EG already giving me all the info I could want 🙂
But why?
Roots are built to grow in the direction of gravity, while leaves aim at pointing to the sun 😭
That’s a great way to make the most of limited real estate
The hydroponic pots work a treat for doing this
We always grow out Tomatoes upside down here in Australia
Great thing to use to hold soil in is Coffee filter
I am growing 2 indeterminate toms in upside down planters…
Too large to transplant now so it should be interesting…😂
Its also important to keep it shielded from the wind. When the fruit gets heavy it'll naturally bend the branches back down as it grows, but if something comes along and pushes it down, like a sudden heavy rain or wind, it'll break branches and die…
That's amazing! I'm going to try this next year for sure on my balcony garden.
I tried this last year. It worked pretty well but the bucket failed with the handle.
An additional support or rope will help the most.
I love that you do videos that show how it works over time all in one video. Too many gardening videos out there show a technique but leave you unconvinced whether it works or not.
Erik 2020: number 1 you are watering from above so it doesnt make sense. Erik 5 years later actually trying it.
Had this idea randomly the other day… what're the odds
very cool!!! would love to try this in my no-garden space!
as for weight.
Remember that water weighs 8.3 lbs per gallon and a 5 gallon bucket can hold at least 3 gallons of water when full of dirt.
This means you need to account for a buffer of at least 24.9 lbs when you hang it up between its dry and wet weight.
Now since there is a huge hole it will be closer to 1.8 gallons of water when wet, but remember as the plant grows and produces fruit, more and more water will be retained and certain growing mediums retain a lot of moisture on their own.
This is truly EPIC gardening!🙌
I cannot judge if that is the best potting mix, but it certainly has the prettiest bag
Could this be done with peppers too?
Why torture these poor plants?! C'mon man, they aren't meant to grow upside down. 🤦🏻♀️
tomato be like "my head hurts"
I remember having the tomato bags that you basically did the same thing – Probably bought it at a fair. It worked but I think I did not give it enough sun and at the time I did not know the difference between ‘indeterminate and determinate’ tomatoes so I also probably grew the wrong type. They are still sold on Amazon, even showing lettuce growing at the top!
But I like DIY method Kevin (aka ‘Eric’) is doing better! Always like the DIY way!
