Hand Pump Wells …..Deep Dive

Today we will take a VERY close look at hand pump wells. What parts to buy, where to buy them, how to drive the well what pitfalls you might encounter and how to get good clean water with a primitive well.

  1. Very, very good advice on picking a parcel for homesteading! Dave, as always, you're in the black!

  2. Hi Dave, Something that I think you might have mentioned is that I know you use outhouses at your cabins and lots of other people do too. So the well should be as far away from the outhouse and also preferably upslope. I work for civil engineers and I don't really know about shallow wells but deep ones are always at least 50' from a septic system.

  3. Cool, now is there ANY way to get a decent 12v pump that you could attach via a 2 way coupler after the ball valve to run water up a hose to the cabin for just summer use? You know as well as I do (see what I did there?- grin) hauling water sucks ……

  4. In Florida, I get water at 3ft, but it's ass-water. I drove a 17ft well, but water is super sulphur smelling. How deep do I need to go?

  5. That was interesting, Dave! Greetings to you & Brooke from the Texas hill country…

  6. You can also look up the well drilling reports in your area to get a good feel on how deep you'll have to go.

  7. Good thing you have good somewhat not so rocky soil there. Here in my area in Nova Scotia there’s rocks, boulders, and cliff rock. Mostly granite. You’d have to invent a hammer drill bit that can have sections added the same as your pipe. Lol. Just as easy to build next to or close to a brook or lake or river. Lol

  8. Im saving up and praying to be able to homestead soon. Thank you for the instructions!

  9. Is the well usable in the winter? Do you just have to prime it every time (since leaving it in the pipe could let it freeze)?

  10. I live in FL so we jet our wells here, but that requires power to pump the jet water. You might want to mound up the soil around the pipe to prevent rainwater from running down the well pipe hole. This can contaminate the water in the well, since it takes a hundred years or so for rain water to filter through the ground to the water table… If you let it run down the pipe hole, it will was contaminants such as microbes and mud down the well.

  11. Hey Dave, we went to two local plumbers who offered to install a hand pump and the one bid was S10,000 with the others bid was $12,000. I am not paying that much for a hand pump well even though we want one very much.

  12. Hey Dave, I drove 2 shallow wells until my neighbor helped me with pump pressure. We put in 53 wells for neighbors, with 1 1/2 hp pump, 55 gallons water and 25ft of 2" PVC with a 1 1/2" fire hose with quick release couplings. After initial drill, we pulled out point and installed the finished 20' PVC and 5' point, totaling 25'. This was done in Florida with a 5-7' water table. I like yours and Brook's videos. Blessings, Brother.

  13. I'll be in Marquette in July I love the peninsula of Michigan I've been going onve or twice a year for the past 5 years. I'm from socal.

  14. I would never in a million years bet that you would have been able to pull that pipe out of the ground like that.
