00:00 White Shirts: Introduction

White shirts are a foundational item in a Classic wardrobe but chances are if you own a white shirt, you’ve already had some experience with the difficulty of keeping them white.

Please note that this video is not about cleaning more general stains from white shirts.

01:20 Why Do White Shirts Discolor?

Discoloration on white shirts can assume a few forms from a general yellow or gray dinginess on the entire shirt to yellow patches in particular areas. The main culprit is body oils and sweat that settle into the shirt’s fabric and eventually become stains.

03:43 Removing Localized Stains

This will likely be concentrated around problem areas like armpits, collars, or cuffs. We’ll begin by applying a cleaning and whitening product directly to the stain. You can use specialized products or diluted liquid or powder detergent mixed with water.

If you prefer a more natural or homemade approach, you can use undiluted white vinegar or make a cleaning paste out of baking soda and water or hydrogen peroxide.

For particularly tough stains or stains that are old and thoroughly set, you can also use a bleach alternative that has many of the cleaning and whiting properties of chlorine bleach but won’t seriously damage most fabrics.

06:25 Removing General Discoloration

For situations in which the entire shirt seems to be discolored which sometimes happens with older, well-worn shirts, you can remove the yucky yellow or grimy gray with a revitalizing wash to restore the shirt’s original whiteness.

One of the easiest cleaning products to use will be a detergent specifically formulated for white fabrics. You can also use about two cups of baking soda.

09:10 20 Quick Tips – 1. Wear an undershirt
2. Don’t forget to scrub your neck
3. Don’t apply personal products directly onto fabrics
4. Spritz shirts with lemon juice before wearing them
5. Pretreat shirts after wearing.
6. Wash white shirts more regularly
7. Quickly handle any stains
8. Pretreat before washing
9. Wash shirts inside out
10. Wash whites separately
11. Use a detergent formulated for whites
12. Use the right amount of detergent
13. Avoid fabric softeners
14. Consider an extra rinse cycle
15. Wash in sufficiently hot water
16. Don’t overload the washer
17. Clean your washer
18. Dry on the gentle cycle or in the sun
19. Be aware of hard water
20. Store white shirts properly

We hope that you enjoyed learning both how to restore the whiteness of white shirts and how to keep them white.

  1. I’m a woman I snuck in to be nosey and also to keep my mama shirts white when he needs me to ????

  2. Best way to wash white shirts making shirts really white is using an oxygen releasing detergent such as Oxyclean in hot water. The active oxygen releasing ingredient in Oxyclean is sodium percarbonate which releases oxygen in hot water, with sodium carbonate (otherwise known as washing soda) as a decomposition product. For heavy biological stains such as yellowed collars and armpits, the ultimate stain removing material is Alconox, which is based on enzymatic action that breaks down protein stain by cleavage of the protein molecule. Since its action is enzymatic, and enzyme protein cleavage is a fairly slow chemical reaction it is best to soak the shirt for a fair period of time, (hours). Alconox is fairly expensive and it is usually sufficient to spray only the stanined areas, folowed by washing (peferably with soaking) using a peroxide/percarbonate detergent in hot water.. (do not use these materials to wash wool or silk, which are protein fibers–pure sodium carbonate for washing can be bought in bulk which is what I do; it is generally color safe and usually brightens colors)

  3. Great video once again fellas. Some good tips for sure. Keep up all the good work. Cheers!

  4. A secret for getting out discoloration shower with dr. Squatch use dr. Squatch deodorant use dr. Squatch cologne shampoo and conditioner lotion hand soap and so forth BTW could the gentleman's gazette actually do a review on dr. Squatch has new cologne and see if it's actually worth it I actually have all three of the newer colognes that they made their really good but I want to see why are they think about it PS because the cologne is so popular it's sold out but when it restocks I suggest that they get the three of them the bundle when it restocks

  5. I agree with some of the comments that a regular cleaning of the washer can have an effect on the results of your cleaning cycle.

  6. As a veterinarian I will say hydrogen peroxide is amazing. I have an neat ruined many shirts during emergency farm calls with horse blood, but some peroxide and cold water will fix quite a lot.

  7. Laundress is not selling anything now. Their page is still about the product-wide recall

  8. I like how Preston enunciates and doesn't rush forward slurring one's speech. Good show!

  9. I usualy like to use bile soap. Just soak the spot you want to clean and then rub the bile soap against the stain and let it sit for 15-30 min before washing.
