How Do I Sell This Dish to You?

Talk to any Thai restaurant owner and they’ll tell you the same thing: convincing customers to try a dish that’s “different” is a huge obstacle. They would love to put all kinds of delicious Thai dishes you’ve never heard of on the menu, but they just don’t sell. So back to pad thai and green curry they go. I catch myself doing the same thing when I eat out, too.

This “curry custard” may sound totally weird, but trust me it is incredible. You already know and love the flavour of Thai red curry, now imagine it with a soft and silky texture. And it’s so easy, the banana leaves are optional. You can also change the curry paste to green or other kinds, not traditional, but totally delish.

Curry steamed eggs is almost a good way to describe it but it makes it seems like the eggs are the star when it’s the curry

I’m a very adventurous eater and I don’t think I’ve ever had a dish anything like a steamed savory custard with seafood. Would be open to trying it

I'm in Thailand right now and recently ate a dish I've never tried before. It changed my life. Flipped it upside down. Its Tom Saap or lang saeb. I think the names may be interchanged. Its pork bone soup with a spicy limey herby chilli filled broth. Hands down my favorite thai dish.

Steamed Curry Quiche? I'd definitely eat something called that, although not this one as sadly I'm allergic to shrimp.

Oh my, that’s hilarious. I don’t like that name at all!

What if we rebranded it to “curry carbonara”? 🤔
    Or maybe… as a “steamed curromelette”. 😂

I’d personally cringe if someone was to serve me it based on name alone- but it looks so good! Maybe a Crème Curry could work? Throw off majority of English speaking people that way and trick them into thinking it’s super fancy 😂❤

It’s a shrimp quiche! Also cooked in banana leaves would be a flavor some Hispanic cultures would understand

Pai, do you have a restaurant in Vancouver or Richmond? Or any recommendations of good Thai in the city?

  10. @electronicexposure

just call it curry and be transparent about the ingredients, I think most people who already like Thai curry would be interested in trying it.

love your recipes Pailin im subscribed and have made a lot of your recipes not as spicy mind you but delish

Generally, in the west, custard has the implication of something sweet, so you might not want to use that term here. I would call it a curry quiche. Quiche is obviously just a savory custard, but it implies the more "accurate" thing. (Also I want some.)

I'd like to see the texture of the custard at the end. Many of your shorts are good but can't understand final result because of this so it would help to cut thing out for eating.
