Thanks to Britton Timbers for supplying the Walnut and Plantation Oak- https://brittontimbers.com.au/

This Leaf Hall Table was built using Walnut and Plantation Oak which is essentially Tasmanian Oak grown in a sustainably controlled environment.
I’ve used copper leaf to help accent some of the details in the top but because the table top isn’t flat, I’ve used 10mm acrylic to provide a flat surface. I decided to use acrylic instead of glass in this situation mostly because of the weight but also because I wanted to use screws to hold down the top. The screws go through the support dowels and into the leaves themselves providing a strong grab. Please note this table has been designed as a display table and isn’t meant for heavy use like a dining table, otherwise acrylic would not be a suitable choice in this scenario. The screws have then been covered by custom oak buttons.
The Oak leaf tops are held into place using some metal brackets that will help the tops to expand and contract, although there won’t be much movement in the oak as it is quarter sawn material.

I decided to share my story of how I became a furniture maker in the hopes that it may give some insight into the process, as well as provide some clarity to those who aren’t sure whether or not they need a qualification.

  1. Very inspiring story Nick! It’s amazing what can be achieved when you have a clear sense of direction.
I knew this line of work was my passion, so at a young age (year 11 at school) I realised that it’d become a job eventually & I would loose that passion. So I kept it for weekends & any spare time I had. 21 years later I have my own renovation business but have started moving into custom furniture for my clients within the last year & loving it.
Makes me wonder how much further along my skill set would be now if I had a fraction of the wisdom you received from your grandfather.
All the hard work pays off in the end. Stay safe!

  2. Beautiful design and build Nick, but more so an inspirational story! We’re all better because of the path you chose! Keep bringing it!!

  3. Another beautiful piece of furniture. Thank you for sharing your story. Nothing arrogant about it.

  4. Thankyou! insightful stuff. A big part of the reason I reverted back to being a hobbyist was the flexibility to build what I wanted to build, and be able to try out different techniques without the pressure of budget and clients. Though you seem to have found a happy medium. great video, keep em coming please!

  5. This channel is my favorite woodworking YouTube channel. I've watched a lot of them and your's truly stands out. The pieces you make are always stunning with great attention to detail, not to mention I love your shop! Thanks so much for sharing your story and I have great respect for you sharing about your accident. You Tube isn't always the kindest place to reveal these things… Not self indulgent, I think I speak for many people who want to know more about the people we admire on You Tube!

  6. You did exactly what a apprentice should do when they finish their apprenticeship, you became a journeyman.

  8. Wow! Absolutely gorgeous table!! ????
Thank you for the insight of your journey in becoming the craftsman and artist that you are today. Keep up the great work and videos. I have learned a lot since I started watching your videos and subscribed to your channel.

  9. Really enjoy your channel and builds. Also really enjoyed learning how you got to where you're at. Looking forward to more.

  10. Wow, just wow! I enjoyed both the story and the build very much. I didn't even know such content existed on YouTube. This is next level.

  11. Holly crap dude!
You are really lucky your able to use your hand at all.
    Amazing!

  12. I started watching your videos a couple of years ago when there was zero voiceover and I always wondered "Who is this guy, and how did he get so good"? Now I know. Thanks!

  13. I watch you to " see what the pros are doing ". Enjoyed the video and your story. Thanks

  14. Very nice design. You could call it the “Pedulla Petal” because the base looks like the base of the tree on your emblem. What was the reason for the acrylic being at different heights?
