How To Build A Tub Deck

I just installed a soaking tub in the new house we’re building- and something’s not right…@hausplans

I know, I need to build a frame for it.
The first thing I did was cut a bunch of short studs.
The lip on the tub sits 16 inches off the floor, so I want my finished deck to be 15 inches tall that way I’ll have room for durock, thinset, and tile.
I built walls out of 2×4, 2×6, and even 2×10 so that all four sides of the tub will be fully supported by framing.
I secured everything with T-25 deck screws- this way there will be no movement or squeaks.
I made sure the framing was plumb and square as I went.
Next, I snapped a line and attached a ledger to the wall. Then I installed one of the 2 x 4 walls I had built further in from the ledger.
Finally , I covered the framing with rim board left over from our floor system.
I fastened it down with 2 inch ring shank nails, making sure to overlap all the spices in the walls.
This inch and an eighth thick rum board was definitely overkill, but it was a great way to use up some leftover material.
Now I just need to decide- do I hire my professional tile guy to install the tile around the deck or save money by using the new guy?

  1. Why do you even ask? You know the internet will always pick the New Guy. All kidding aside, you are a master of your craft. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  2. Depending on the day, the new guy is either wasted or hungover. Both of those make for shoddy craftsmanship. Hire a pro and send the new guy out to pick up loose nails and screws that got dropped.

  3. New guy might have considered raising the tub enough to see out the window.

  4. First of all it’s plumbed and everything seems to be plumbed wrong. I mean it’s code it’s just that plastic pipe like that was not meant to have 90’s and also the least amount of fitting as well. It’s not supposed to be piped like copper. Really you’re supposed to use a manifold type of system.

  5. How does Guga handle the spice in proper fried rice? He has a low tolerance?
