Thank you all so much for watching and Grow BIG!
So much new information. Thanks.
Boy oh boy I sure did wrong. I had yellow taters that formed eyes in fridg over winter and just thru them in a pot whole! Was I ever wrong! Thanks Luke, maybe I'll do better next year. <3
Amazing video, as always! Now that I know how to get the po-ta-toes ready to plant…I need to know how many pieces to plant in the fabric pots that I'm planning to use as recommended in one of your other recent videos. I'm sure you're going to cover that in a video as you get to that point in the process, but, I'm trying to be ahead of the game!
Sounds great. I actually have small potatoes from last year's harvest that I intend to plant so to small to cut up. I also trimmed sprouts from a large potato and planted them in a small planter which I transplanted to a large pot and they grew. Got a small harvest even though I had to eat the rest of the potato. I was running out and had to use for dinner. So lucky me that it grew I guess. Thanks Luke. That honey use is such a sweet idea.
Luke, you need a bigger paintbrush ????
Luke- I too live in Michigan. This is the first year I am going to try to grow potatoes (in containers). Couple of questions. 1. I have seed potatoes, do you cut the also like you did in this video? I watched your video on growing potatoes in containers you did years ago and you did not mention cutting you seed potatoes. 2. Can I plant my seed potatoes now in containers? If they can't be outside yet, I do have grow lights. Thank you in advance. I love all your videos
Thanks for the info. Love the mural!
While they scab over, how should they be stored?
Things you left out because you talk too much.
1. Where are you storing for two weeks when finished? Do you close the egg carton?
2. Lots of things are acidic like lemon juice. Could you use that?
3. Can you use any old potato out of your cupboard? Like a potato with really long chits?
I didn't know about brushing honey on the outside of the potato. I plan to do this. I'm wondering when to plant my cured potato seeds here in 6B zone (Idaho). Thanks.
I chitted some smaller potatoes. I did not cut them, and left only 2 chits to grow per potato. Was told anything more than 2 would be too many. We’ll see how they do. The honey was new information. Thank you!!
I have a question! My first round are already in the ground. I'm trying for a double crop of potatoes this year (benefits of 196 planting days). Should I put my seed potatoes for my late harvest in the refrigerator for a few weeks before chitting them?
Could you dip the potato wedge in lemon juice to prevent bacterial growth on the potato slices while they cure? That’s acidic!
Luke, I cut my potatoes on Saturday morning. I was going to plant them tomorrow. Is it too late to paint them with honey? Do I even need to at this point? I had thought they only needed to scab over for a couple days.
After honey do you put them back eyes up or down!
I have a potato on my kitchen window sill, it has been there for almost 2 months, it has 2 large sprouts one at each end, and they are now a little over an inch tall, and one has 3 branches, and they have little tiny leaves. The question is when should we plant them, we live in eastern Virginia (Richmond area)?
The truth is, with the recent economy. Everyone needs more than their salary to be financially stable. The best thing to do with your money is to invest it properly, because money left for savings always ends up being used with no return.
What should I do with seed potatoes that have started growing in the basement. Eyes have sprouted and are about a foot long. Should I cut the sprouts back to an inch or so? I'm in northern Illinois. Current temps are around freezing at night and 40s during the day.
I am just about to plant my 1st Earlies (in buckers) so this have been a very useful video for me. I am also trying to grow some sweet potatoes (a very different method being used for those) and I saw one online gardener covering the exposed cut face of the 'slips' with cement! Rather strange, I thought. I have never heard of applying honey in that way. but will certainly be trying that now.
I am getting some 5 gall tubs especially for growing potatoes, but plan on using ordinary 3 gal buckets (with drain holes added) for these. Being smaller than, say, maincrop King Edward ones. I am hoping that with the smaller, cut, potato seeds with 2-3 eyes each, that 3 per bucket will not be too crowded and will crop well. Thank from the UK you for your helpful tips.
I don't have enough space for all that many potatoes. I watched your video where you planted potatoes whole and decided to do that.
I’ll have to try that with my fall planting… I’ve known honey is antibacterial but I never thought to apply it to my potato slits???? I wonder what it can help in other plants? Diseases and such.
We do this also , and use the middle for dinner
Can you use whole potatoes that are starting to shrivel up but have eyes? My potatoes from last year are starting to do that and I would like to use them as seed potatoes if possible but don’t want to waste time and space if they won’t produce or produce poorly. Thanks!
Love your patience and your enthusiasm for something as simple as growing potatoes!❤
**PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ****
DO NOT CUT YOUR POTATOES.
This is completely wrong. Please, I refer you to Paul Gautschi.
This is a quick video.

Can you use vinegar for a honey replacement?
A seed potato should be larger than a golf ball and smaller than a tennis ball. You should eat the rest.
