I Just Hired Someone to Backfill Around Our New House, and His Bill Was Outrageous!

I just hired this guy to backfill around my new house- he said his name was Exca-Vator and his helper’s name was Mini Exca-Vator.
This guy gave off kind of a weird vibe, but once I saw him operating I was impressed.
Now I had already filled up around the foundation with crushed stone and then we put down a layer of filter fabric.
The filter fabric prevents silt from washing into the stone and keeps is clean.
I’m not ready to grade up the entire yard, I just want him to fill in the over dig around the house.
I asked him to use the dirt that was piled at the back of the house from when we dug out the basement.
On some jobs there’s extra dirt that has to be hauled away. For this job I’m probably going to have to haul in 30-50 loads.
It’s important when you’re grading up to slope everything away from the house.
In our area code requires that you slope away a minimum of six inches over the first ten feet.
Because there’s no gutter at this stage, I like to put straw around the foundation.
This keeps the water that pours off the roof from splattering mud up onto the brick, which can permanently stain it.
This guy did a good job over all, but I thought his bill was outrageous.
Let me know in the comments- what do you guys think? @hausplans

  1. Mud doesn’t stain proper brick. Just use some brick acid to clean anything off that’s marked them up

  2. your AC line sets (copper lines) coming out of the house, i highly reccomend facing them down to ensure NO moisture/rainwater gets inside those pipes, if that happens its a pain in the ass to deal with and will ruin your AC unit if left un checked

Hvac tech of 10 years, i would plug those copper lines with anything more effective than the shitty plastic plugs that come with them , even just some good tape over those plugs and face them down will ensure 100% no moisture gets in

  3. 6in over 10 ft is kind of a lot isn’t it. At least noticeable I think they should have something similar where I am. So many houses are built and the grade just dumping water into the house. Then they have the sump pump it out for it to come back again.

  4. There is always a master and a apprentice, mini-vader is certainly the sid lord
