  1. You don’t need a louder voice. You need better eye contact.

    Most people think presence in meetings comes down to how loud you are or how much you speak.

    It doesn’t.

    Presence is less about volume, and more about where you look.

    If you’re more soft-spoken… or just tend to fade into the background…
    Let your eyes do the heavy lifting.

    Here’s a non-verbal technique I teach leaders:

    LOCK – SWEEP – LAND

    1️⃣ Lock
    → Start by locking eyes with the decision-maker for two solid seconds.

    2️⃣ Sweep
    → Slowly move your gaze across the room.

    3️⃣ Land
    → End on someone who hasn’t spoken yet. It’s a subtle cue that says: “You’re up.”

    Why it works:

    → Lock builds credibility.
    → Sweep signals connection.
    → Land invites contribution.

    This way, you're speaking AND directing attention.
    It's a powerful way to build presence.

    (Virtual meetings are a little different… there’s no one to look at except the camera. So when you’re speaking, aim to look directly into the lens. It creates the feeling of eye contact for everyone watching.

    And don’t forget your facial expressions. Your face is often front and center on their screen (and often very large too), so keep it engaged and expressive. It’s your chance to connect, even through a screen) 🙃
