Make This Amazing Salad Tower!

Ben’s been busy sawing, drilling and planting to create this rather eye-catching salad tower. It’s planted with a range of different lettuces to give a tapestry of leaves perfect for pepping up meal times and livening up the patio or balcony.

This is an easy project, and Ben will take you through each step, explaining how to make your own salad tower so you too can grow salads in the smallest of spaces.

  1. I guess it's not just salads that you can grow in there. I could imagine strawberries too. Or bushbeans.

  2. Great idea, but won't the lettuce be done growing before the kitchen scraps break down enough to do any good?

  3. This is great but, please, in the name of all things holy, don't ever use a heat gun to strip wallpaper! ????????????????????

  4. I have always really liked all your projects but this one is particularly ingenious especially with the way you made the slots stand out!! Very cool!!

  5. Ben that is a great take on a vertical growing method and looks very inexpensive. I also like the chicken wire central tower, that is something I do in my larger beds. I take chicken wire and wrap it around 1 gallon paint cans for a size guide ( 7 inch diameter) or around a 5 gallon paint bucket for a 14 inch diameter cage and place them in my planters and start the fill process and cover with black trash bags. Keeps the rodents and flies out. Thanks for that.

  6. Great idea Ben just off to get the wine so I can make the holes ???? have a great weekend

  7. Brilliant I am definitely doing this and one for my mum , really good for anyone who has limited space , think I will add parsley ,just a great idea Thankyou Ben

  8. Well done! I would definitely do this if I didn't already have vertical towers.

A DIY tip that may help when cutting into something with a saw is to first drill large pilot holes at the ends. This may also keep the ends of the cut from splitting open wider than you planned. Have a great day. ????

  9. I'm thinking that a 3-in hole saw on a drill base would make easy holes as well.

  10. Thank you Ben! ???? Can we use this for planting other things, such as strawberries? ???? Really appreciate you teaching us this method. ????????

  11. What an excellent idea! I made a flower tower before, but I really like the lettuce tower as well. That would work well for herbs that you want close to your door. Thanks for sharing.

  12. Thanks, Ben! I have 2 of those commercial grow towers and, I stopped using them. The constant having to rotate them to make sure this side and that side gets sun became such a chore. But more, they dried out so fast, that I was watering 2 times a day. BUT, on a good note…The birds love them. The song birds found one of mine, a couple of years ago, and they come back each year to nest and have their babies. I make sure I leave it where they can find it. It's worth it! ????

  13. Honestly I was kind of expecting an April fools video today, anyway even then this plant tower really is a great idea and I truly appreciate him sharing this amazing idea with us.

  14. Definitely going to do this, except I'm going to add WORMS down that centre column along with the food scraps!

  15. Oh, thank you, Ben. I bought a fabric tower years ago ad I put it on top of a brick stand with a lazy susan with holes and now I know what to do with it. I may plant succulents, lettuce or strawberries.
I do have a vinyl pipe in it drilled with holes for composting and watering. Thank you for the reminder.

  16. Great idea! I've got a lovely strawberry planter that strawberries don't seem to like. Think I'll plant lettuce in it!

  17. I was given a strawberry planter last year and put lettuce in ????❤️
I love the composting column idea.

  18. A great way of growing a lot of salad in a small space. I suppose if you wanted to grow in the summer months, you could reposition it easily in a shady area (presuming you have one) to stop them bolting, and move it back to a sunny spot in autumn.

  19. Could you use a perforated bunch of smaller bottles stacked up instead of the wire? I can get that wire in the back yard but not as easily available to others. Window screen?
