00:00 Collar Jewelry Introduction

Pertaining to collar jewelry, which we’re defining as any jewelry worn on the collar of a dress shirt as part of classic men’s style. We won’t be discussing today are types of jewelry from other menswear sub-genres like modern collar studs or casual chains.

01:27 History of Collar Jewelry

Throughout history, mankind has had a fascination with wearing jewelry around the neck – from the Ancient Egyptian Usekh and the Celtic lunula to medieval and early modern bejeweled collars and gorget. The last of these was originally a decorative piece of armor protecting the throat.

02:14 Starched Collar Jewelry: 1. Collar Studs
03:25 2. Tie Retainers
05:19 Soft Collar Jewelry: 3. Collar Tips
06:40 4. Collar Brooches

The three most commonly worn types of collar jewelry, both historically and today, are:

07:27 5. Collar Pins
10:18 6. Collar Bars
14:29 7. Collar Clips

Our collar clip is more ergonomic with its concave middle, giving your tie a place to sit, creating a perfect harmony between tie knot, collar, and clip. We’ve engineered our clips with tighter coils than other brands, ensuring that they won’t slip, giving you a good grip without damaging your collar.

16:19 Construction and Materials

The specific functionality of each type of collar jewelry dictates how it’s assembled, but the most important aspect across all types is the material from which the jewelry is made.

At Fort Belvedere, our collar jewelry is made from solid brass or stainless steel, ensuring durability and a pleasant heft, and it’s then plated with one of three precious metals – brilliant yellow gold, warm rose gold, or alluring silver platinum.

18:37 Tips For Wearing: 1. Not above the knot
19:04 2. Know your knot
19:19 3. Suitably sized
19:57 4. Less is more
20:32 5. Formulate formality

So, now that you’ve collared all there is to know about collar jewelry, we can’t wait to see what kinds of looks you put together with this unique menswear accessory type.

  1. I use stays on daily basis, but I admit I'm not a collar pin or bar fan. Excellent video as usual. Preston is a great narrator. Cheers.

  2. I secretly watch this channel and go to my closet and realize the suit I bought 20 years ago is back in style.

  3. Still got my collar bar from the 80's when they were in vogue with New Romantics.
In the English speaking world its pronounced 'gorjet' not gorjay …. just as valet is pronounced as its spelt.

  4. I love wearing my ties and coats. Not many people seem to do it anymore, but you guys really bring back the spirit and style! Thanks for educating and encouraging of the true gentleman attire 🙂

  5. To me they're all just too finicky. I think the tie should have a free-flowing look.

  6. It amazes me how well this video is edited. It might be one of the best simply edited informational videos I have ever seen. There are so many subtleties in the shifts while keeping the representation clean and minimal. I feel most can easily overlook it in passing glance, but it really is impressive.

  7. Preston needs to be on the Faculty of Men's Style at Oxford … as Professor Emeritus!

  8. after years of watching this channel i have finally made the decision to transition into a woman. I would like to thank preston for his quality content and presentation, its been invaluable to me as i explore my personal style.

  9. I recently purchased an original Anson 1940s collar bar from Thomas Farthing's jewellery archive and I must admit it has began somewhat of an obsession for me with antique jewellery. They really look great with a proper spearpoint collar shirt.

  10. Video says the Fort Belvedere collar clips won't slip off, but mine do, which is why I tried them once and had to take it off because one end kept slipping off.
