MODERN BUILDS

Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I’m a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I’ve focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

  1. Angle grinder = Safety glass, in particular if you are using carbide or titanium oxide discs, you don't want one of them exploding near your face without protection.

  2. I’m done with this series, you gotta stop yelling at the camera it’s incredibly off-putting. Practice your indoor voice.

  3. A great technique that knocks out the drywall skim coat faster and more consistently would be to use a paint roller. Thin your mud down and use a thick nap roller. Roll the mud on like paint and use a taping knife to smooth everything out 🙂 Wonderful for beginners, especially! Also always helps to seal the exposed paper with a primer like a can of B-I-N to prevent blistering.

Great job, Mike! Love what you do.

  4. Bosch make a drywall bit that works on any drill so you don't need another tool.

  5. Just a little tip about a drywall drill… It's not worth it. Just get the drywall dimpler bit. It has a ring that prevents you from sinking too far. It's also just a couple bucks.

  6. "There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed." –Ray Goforth

  7. don't get a gun just for dry wall screws unless you are planning on taking up drywall full time, they sell drywall screw bits for impact/drill. any time you have a new bucket of mud it doesn't hurt to mix in a cup or two of water and mix it with a paddle mixer it will soften the mud up so its easier on your wrists and smoother finish

  8. Y'all will do anything to avoid drywall, it's really not that bad ???? Personally I hate painting more.

  9. Just sayin this dude sounds like one of the characters from the movie rock a doodle.

  10. Love how much faith you put in us, your viewers, that we'll be able to accomplish the stuff you've done. Maybe it's misplaced faith, but always appreciated! ????

  11. I'm just going to have to see the finished project; these individual videos showing what you're doing really don't interest me personally, but good luck in your efforts!!
