NEVER TOO SMALL: Calm and Narrow Minimalist Apartment, Buenos Aires – 30sqm/323sqft

Inspired by modern Japanese apartment design, architect Jesús Huarte completely reinvented this 30 square metre Buenos Aires apartment located in the central neighbourhood of Recoleta. Originally lacking natural light due to its narrow and deep floorplan, the addition of new windows, and a bright palette dramatically brightened the home. Redividing the space using glass walls made more of the space usable, splitting it into new kitchen, living and sleeping zones that were previously all one space. Added closed storage extends from the entryway into the kitchen creating a sense of calm by concealing much of the home’s clutter. Light green marble in the bathroom and kitchen, alongside touches of colourful paint accent the white palette throughout; and alongside an indoor swing add a sense of playfulness to the home.

  1. It boils down to the client's needs and the brilliance of the architect.
Love it … and the swing is " a cherry on top"! 🙂

  2. Some very nice features for a small and challenging space! Too bad there's no exhaust for the kitchen range, though! ????✌️

  3. The flat has a great airy and light atmosphere and I somehow like the room dividers. But I don't know if the divider between kitchen and dining room is necessary.

  4. It's a very clean and sober look. I do appreciate the wall between kitchen and dining area – makes things discrete. However: Why putting the bedroom at the end of this flight of rooms, where it meets most of the light coming in from the balcony? I would have created a living area there, with a beautiful sofa – I don't get, what that might have to do with watching tv or not …

  5. Very nice renovation, and it's clearly well suited with client's needs, which is most important thing.

  6. Great use of space…. definitely would take a touch more colour as it's really bright…I also think the the partition in the center of the kitchen and dining room….was removed it would look so much bigger….still the use with breakfast bar.. balcony area stunningly beautiful…

  7. Muy buen tra bajo Territorio de Arquitectura. Es muy lindo encontrar ejemplos de creatividad de nuestro país.

  8. Stunning bathroom, gorgeous light filled apartment – would look lovely without internal walls and windows.

  9. It always puzzles me that murphy beds are not being used in small flats. The bed is as comfy as a normal bed and once folded it gives room for a living space.

  10. Interesting and light space but a lack of comfy sitting area wouldn’t suit me or the glass wall without wall or curtains from the bedroom to rest of the flat. Bathroom was my favourite.

Felicitaciones.

  12. This is very clever and functional! I like it. I could live there and make it my own.

  13. I don't like the glass panels at all. They give me anxiety. They feel like the entire apartment is just a bunch of balconies stitched together.

  14. I think this design doesn't enhance the space and quality of living. Best part new and bigger windows.

  15. I like that there is no TV 🙂 I don't like how most of apartments have a sofa and TV place like there is nothing else to do at home.

  16. I don’t really understand the need for the extra walls – they don’t add storage or seating. The illusion of more space by creating distinct areas maybe?

  17. I've a long narrow house similar to this, but with no windows on the left, just 2 windows at the back which is a fixed kitchen area, and even smaller windows in front. Anyone has tips on how i can make the space look less claustrophobic and dark? 🙂 thanks!

  18. I feel the wall between kitchen and dining area was unnecessary. Despite that, great idea to use the glass separation to let the light in!

  19. Demolish the partition between the bedroom and the dining room and just hang curtains. And remove the glass partition between the kitchen and dining room. And the apartments would become more convenient and visually larger. And it would be easier to clean up.

  20. This person took a small space, added MORE walls and installed a freaking swing in the middle of the walkway? This, by far, is the worst.

  21. The glasspanelled wall between the kitchen and the dining area is so unnecassary. It looks a bit restricted area the dinining one, a bit clystophobic. Only the wall which seperates the bedroom is needed.

  22. I must say that the background music matches the apartment greatly.
Keep up the good work! :))

  23. I like the renovation but I wonder how effective the partition between the kitchen and dining space is. Would be nicer to have it slightly more open for hosting. And I think a bench styled seating arrangement around the table could make it more casual allowing the space to be better used as a living/social area with the simple addition of some cushions on the bench and the possibility of a small portable projector for the nice blank wall in the cubby where the folding mattress currently lies. Just the thoughts I had while watching ????????

  24. There's something agitating about this design, couldn't live there at all. It's way too open and bright, I doesn't make you feel like you step into a personal refuge of quiet and coziness but the world from outside still intrudes in an distracting way, but people are different I guess.
