REFINISHING SIDE TABLES with a natural finish…Oh- and IS THAT WOODWORM??

Insect damage & infestation is probably the scariest part about flipping furniture, but thankfully, I don’t run into it that often. Woodworm used to be far more common, though it does still exist, as well as other wood boring larvae. It doesn’t require damp conditions to exist, but they certainly do thrive in them, and areas where finish is missing are particularly susceptible. This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to make sure your furniture’s finish remains intact, and why “ruining the value” by refinishing is a bit of a double edged sword- because if the finish is damaged, the piece is vulnerable to rot, water damage, and insect damage. Where is the “value” in that??

These side tables are not old, but they were made to LOOK old, using multiple tools to create the look of worm holes, and boring trails. It is seen occasionally in modern furniture with an antique style. It helps to “sell” it. Literally and figuratively. But there was finish covering all of the holes, holes were found only on visible areas (the undersides of the top and bottom braces had not a single hole), and the boring trails were all completely uniform in width and definition. If there were REAL holes, they would be more uniform in size, there would be frass (the powdery refuse produced by the insects) in and around the holes, and you would likely see real structural damage, not just surface “wounds”.

I hope you enjoy this transformation. ❤️

  1. I love what you did with these tables!!! ❤❤❤ I'm also glad that you went outside your style, I definitely learned some things!!! I knew about wormwood and about the imitations, just happy to hear you explain it to us. ???? And that green tape is super sweet!!!

  2. Beautiful! Is the stain application the final finish or did you apply a topcoat of some type?

  3. As always great work, you made them look very elegant to what they where. I need the weather to start changing round here so I can start some of my projects. Thank you for all the knowledge you bring to us amateurs.

  4. The finish came off so beautifully, it was like a commercial for the stripper! More beautiful work!!

  5. Could it be hemlock or elm? It looks a lot like a hemlock bed my dad built years ago.
