Welcome to Lesson 1 — Posture 🙂

Correct posture is paramount when it comes to good singing. It allows the voice and body to function freely and at optimum, without tension.

To get the most OUT of this lesson, it’s great if you can do it in front of a mirror. If you don’t have access to a mirror in the place that you’re studying this lesson, you can turn your webcam on or take a portable device into whichever room has a mirror for you to look into.

This Lesson is from The Singing Solutions Program, written and produced by Rae Henry.

  1. I actually have issues with the website, I couldn't get the audio and music sheet materials you stated earlier in your caption there. It wasn't on the webpage

  2. Rae Thank you so much for giving out this valuable lesson for free. We really appreciate you. You're a blessing indeed.

  3. I can't wait to get started on learning to sing. Question, men and women sing differently but is the learning process the same for both? would these lessons also get results for men?

  4. This was so easy to understand and it helped me immediately thank you ❤️ I shall continue working with this

  5. How can you get thumb downs?! You explain everything in detail to make sure we all understand and I also think it is very creative of you for putting a virtual background with a monitor! You are the best YouTube vocal coach I've ever seen! Thank you so much!!!

  6. I was working on the recommended posture… My back ached a little. I guess it's more like my body wasn't accustomed to the posture.

  7. Hi Rae,

First I want to thank you and compliment you on putting together really outstanding content. I appreciate how knowledgeable, articulate, and concise you are. You give a lot of information but you really stay on point which makes it much easier to digest!

I did want to make one tiny little point. At the end of the Posture lesson you recommend not doing weight lifting. I am not only a trained musician (Berklee College of Music Grad 1981 and I taught music for 34 years) but I am also a certified fitness professional. I would agree that competitive weight lifting probably isn't a good idea. However appropriate strength training can actually be beneficial for singers, or any person, by maintaining muscular balance throughout the physical structure.

While it is true that many people don't have awareness of good posture, many are compromised by muscle imbalances caused by sitting at computers, driving, and general repetitive movements using the same muscles over and over. Much of this can be corrected by doing some mindful strengthening exercises that especially address the posterior part of the body (especially areas like the scapular retractors, rear deltoids, latissimus dorsi etc).

Additionally, mindful strengthening exercises use very specific, rhythmic breathing (exhale on exertion, inhale when returning back to start position) which I have found has actually enhanced my singing.

Sorry to go on about all that, but I wouldn't want people to feel that they should forgo strength training for fear of it negatively impacting their singing when in fact it can do just the opposite (and strengthening exercises don't have to be barbells, dumbbells, but can be resistance bands, cable exercises etc).

Thanks for indulging me by letting me clarify this. 🙂

  8. I recently found your website/youtube. Are you still coaching? you are wonderful! Thank you

  9. Watched this video to try and improve posture. Left feeling depressed about my belly.

  10. SO that relaxation exercise made me VERY relaxed. I me do this every day even if I din't end up singing. 🙂

  11. Hello Rae, thank you for your generosity and attention to the viewer. Very well explained.  You are very thorough, organized, and experienced, and it shows.  I noticed that you use well educated thought, while making  these video's. My name is Deborah, from Kalispell, Montana saying hello, and much love to you, from my family to yours.  MUCH THANKS!

  12. We need to pretend in order to become is a wonderful reference. In toddlers, when they are beginning to speak they go through a period referee to as use before meaning. So on a subconscious level, everyone you advise gets it-whether they know it or not.
    Nerdy tidbit
