Sliding home doubles size with walls-on-rails, brings Nature in

Caspar Schols built his first shapeshifting house in his mother’s backyard as her writing cabin that, by sliding a room-on-rails, could convert into a place to sleep under the stars.

He has since perfected his expandable home with 10 prototypes: his most recent model is robust enough to serve as a primary residence and has a bathtub and guest bed hidden in the floor.

[Watch the original video in which Caspar Schols shows us the 1st. prototype shed built for his mother: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZbOR4s2Jms]

The house can be opened up – on sunny days, for nature-watching, or just to sleep directly under the stars – with just a push. The entire walls and ceiling of the house move, but anyone can propel this 3,000 kilograms (over 6000 pounds) room-on-rails because Schols created a system that is “super low friction”.

To create a well-insulated home that has walls that move, Schols and his team designed the rails with wind labyrinths to trap the air and added brushes to any moving surface to prevent airflow.

  1. this is a very cool idea during the day, however I think I'd get some bad vibes at night surrounded only by glass. This would be perfect as an optional bedroom, if it was only one wing of the house like that.

  2. His training in physics seems to inform and compliment his excellent designs! I was wondering though about the concern for flooding over this upland he built on in what looks like a wetland environment? Thanks Kirsten for another great video!

  3. muy bueno el proyecto y la toma de decisiones para llegar a este resultado sorprendente! gracias por compartir!

  4. Since he thinks throwing a bucket of water at the toilet floor cleans it, I am not convinced that he has thought through how to keep this house clean.

Also, nowhere to wash hands after using the toilet.

  5. It is joy-giving to watch the enthusiasm of the architect describing their "journey of invention" where sometimes the littlest things (wind-brush with bicycle-brake-like lever-actuation) demonstrate attention to detail, and patient thought.

  6. This is pure genius, even the afterthought on design modifications, and I love the adaptability of the spaces created. I hope this wins awards, fantastic!

  7. Er zijn hele knappe nederlandse uitvinders , wat deze video weer laat zien .

  8. I was born nearby the Biesbosch natural water resevoir in the city of Breda , outstanding architectual masterpiece , i hope many more houses like this one will be build .

  9. Kristen you’re a really good documentary film maker, every video is casual and intimate while looking great and being informative.

  10. what problem does this actually solve ? just seems like an endless chore

  11. It would take some sort of special property in the United States for this house. Large predators, cougars, bears, wolves, alligators, boa constrictors, moose, wolverines, etc, would be a concern to sleep out in the open like that. Let alone bad people.

  12. Love it, it's perfect. One for each adult child and parent. I'd need five with this location, of course. I do recall seeing the film about the first one, hence why at first I thought "wait a minute this looks familiar" and yes Casper, with each building your ideas have enhanced the experience. Thank you

  13. Complexity and expense that can just be replaced by having an outdoor lounging area…

  14. The perfect tiny house concept. Especially in America with the strict zoning laws.
