Succession planting in summer to keep beds full

Maximize your harvest with my no-dig gardening techniques. Say goodbye to the tiring task of bed preparation and hello to quick and efficient replanting. With my methods, there’s no need to add more compost or amendments, allowing you to easily replant or resow your beds right after harvesting.

Prepare yourself for the second half of the growing season by stocking up on a variety of seeds and seedlings. My videos guide you on the best times to sow a range of vegetables for successful succession planting.

If you want a comprehensive understanding of these techniques, I recommend checking out my Skills book, available at: https://charlesdowding.co.uk/product/charles-dowdings-skills-for-growing/.

From mid-June through to mid-August, you’ll have the opportunity to clear space for new plantings. Just imagine harvesting early sowings of beetroot, carrots, salad onions, lettuce, peas, broad beans, cabbage, broccoli, and second early potatoes, and then quickly replacing them with new crops. I’ve found successful succession pairings such as broad beans to broccoli, potatoes to leeks, onions to kale, spinach to cucumber, and early cabbage to French beans.

Don’t overlook the benefits of intersowing and interplanting! By utilizing these techniques, you’ll make the most of every available space in your garden, maximizing your food production from a smaller area.

This video was filmed at the picturesque Homeacres in Somerset, UK by the talented Edward Dowding in early June 2023, showcasing the real-life application of my proven methods.

  1. Thx Charles for all the inspiring and relaxing videos you make… I moved with my family to Bulgaria last year and we are making huge progress in growing our own vegetables! Of course with NoDig ❤. It works so well and there such a lot more light and warmth here and nature is very strong. I really learned a lot from your videos! Thank you ????❤

  2. mister charly! que tan grandes deben de estar las plantulas para el trasplante se me han muerto varias o se extresan demaciado????

  3. Everyone knows the seed packets generally have 10x more seed than you'll use….so if you do have the space to sow indoors, or in greenhouse, this is great to do just in case you can interplant as Mr Dowding shows. If you don't get to use those seedlings—no harm done, just compost them (if you can bear it) but they'll still have plant power to add to your compost! Win-win!

  4. If only, if only you would move to Kentucky US so our planting/ harvesting dates would be the same. Always a lovely video. Thank you.

  5. Hi Charles, great video! I would love to see a video on your thoughts of Copper tools, magnetised water and other biodynamic principles outlined by Rudolf Steiner. There's hardly any good info online about these topics.

  6. Charles I just forwarded this to my 20 yr old daughter whose garden plot is next to mine. I told her to think about what will be there after her beets, carrots, radishes, sweet peas etc are done. Perfect timing on this vid. Not my problem in my crowded plot. I’m sticking flower seeds in between everything. It’s wonderful that she’s now getting into gardening

  7. My garlic came out, in went beetroot, lettuce and even some late to plant potatoes. When my early potatoes come out, in goes leek. I never used to do that, until i came across your channel

  8. I love your calendar and books, Charles! I don't quite grow all the same things as on the calendar but it's really helpful as a reminder of what I can grow here in USA and in my zone. It helps to learn of what I might be able to sow and when, and helps not to miss the window of sowing. Thanks for all your work! Cheers. ????

  9. My mother grew up on a farm so I’ve always gardened her way. Intrigued by no dig I began gardening your way about a year and a half ago. I’m beginning to be very happy with it. As luck would have it I was just planning what I could plant where onions and cabbage are about to come out. Thanks for the effort you put into your wonderful videos.

  10. Hello Charles, what beautiful seedlings I would love to have those planting calendars but I can't one day I congratulate you on your dedication to the garden I send you greetings

  11. Hi Charles. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Your videos have inspired me to do our own veg garden this year. I have a question tho,, can you tell me what you spray your potatoes with to prevent blight. Some of the sprays for potato blight seem to be incredibly toxic and I don't feel comfortable using them.. ????

  12. Thank you Charles for this fabulous information, and reminder to be always tending to the garden with good planning.

  13. I find 2 beetroot seeds per module hardly give you more than 4 plants. Some will have 2 or 3, though. You dont waste seedlings by thinning.
