Theres a reason behind everything that is done. The horizontal slice when preparing onions not only results in a more uniformed dice which is very strict in restaurants but can also result in a stronger flavour as the enzymes are broken more. Of course though, do what is easiest for you.

I've never heard of this being controversial. People just be talking to talk
"Controversial" ? In what way?
Rectangle vs square, basically ????????
????????Can't believe you made a whole video without saying "scraps" or "Stock" Keep up the good work chef. Enjoy your videos ????????????????????????????
I learned how to cut onions like this from the late Anthony Bourdain
You're the best! Ty for making it easier bc I hate cutting onions❤
I used to cut onions the first way, and then watching your videos I learned to make the horizontal cut, now I always do it as chef Jack showed me to.
Very good tips mate
That makes sense to me. Next time when I go to cut an onion I'm going to try that horizontal slice ????
The goat that taught me how to cut an onion
I always cut my onions the first way so as to get the tiniest pieces I can get. I don't understand why it's controversial????
thanks 4 the proof
Is it actually that controversial or is it only controversial because some know it all on social media pooned it for attention?
Cause that method was how I was taught.
I mean the real value is not cutting off the top of the onion like I do and then struggle to hold it all together as I am cutting lol
What about the radial cut? I've heard of people doing it where you cut the onion with the round shape of it
As for someone who always cuts onions the wrong way, this how to video will add so much value!
Cutting onions anyway is enough to make you ????.
Nothing beats a thick cut slice for burgers.
What I do is make the vertical cuts, then quickly smack the sides making shallow cuts, almost like the motion of beating an egg.
It's the fastest and most uniform way I have ever seen it done.
I learnt it from seeing some random dude in Japan do it doing prep for a tiny restaurant.
type into youtube: "helen rennie onion dice without parallel cut"
I cant comprehend you. Onion is naturally julienne therefore the horizontal slice is useless. Even if it was "usefull" you only slice the middle, what about above and below, your only affecting a tiny amount. Cant you see the horizontal slice is useless!
i like to do 2 horizontal slices makes even fine cubes
