  1. About the chili powder..yeah..that amount of the chili powder I buy here in that pan would be enough to set a country ablaze. Eating just a tablespoon could literally kill a grown man, and I'm using literally in the literal sense here. About a teaspoon provides heat to a dish comparable to a single red fresh Spanish chili (without the fruity sweetness of the fresh chili of course). The amount you were using would compare to the whole pan absolutely packed with Spanish chili.

  2. your 10 is my 5 haha. red pepper flakes are a MUST HAVE in my kitchen, way more than cinnamon or others but that is me also I tend to use mixed Italian dried herbs as opposed to them individually

  3. I agree, cumin is by far #1. Second is something you haven't mentioned which is smoked paprika. I add it to almost everything. I also recently discovered different Mexican dried, smoked chillis (which are not super easy to get in my part of the world) and I do a lot of different stuff with it. As a vegetarian, I also use a lot of nutritional yeast (although doesn't work with everything) and mushroom seasoning from Asian stores. Btw, your honorable mentions are virtually not known anywhere in the world except US.

  4. In Poland we rarely get something else than dried cayenne powder, that less spicy chilli is not widely available at all. It might be hidden on the online shops somewhere but that's a whole different story. A regular supermarket has sweet paprika, smoked paprika and cayenne, that's it.

  5. I'm going to use your list as a guide for cleaning my out-of-control spice situation but I already know I can't give up my tarragon.

  6. Greetings from Canada! I use chili powder a lot, and it's pretty easy to come by here. Not sure if the flavour is the same, the one I use is kind of tangy with a little chili kick.

Also, thank you for always keeping your recipes and videos practical for us everyday-home-cooks. This is a great list of basic spices to keep on hand.

  7. Your good lady is correct. Chilli powder outside the US is just that – chillies. And then you have my fave – Kashmiri Chilli powder, an absolute essential for Indian cooking.

  8. love chinese 5 spice, gotta have dried parsley since i dont cook often enough to warrant getting the fresh stuff, and bay leaves since i do love my soups.

  9. This is almost like you're sitting us down for a spice intervention. Good job as always.

  10. When you hit number 2 I was like 'holy s**t there's no way he didn't include cumin' assuming you'd put black pepper as number 1, but whew… alright we're chill.

  11. My 10 are coarse black pepper, kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, turmeric, basil, oregano. We do a lot of bbq/grilling, pasta, chili, and single skillet meals. Enjoyed the video.

  12. Congratulations on the 1M subscribers – we've been fingers crossed on it for a bit now. Did I hear you say that the 'Anglosphere' doesn't use spices? Am I understanding you? Is this the implication that those of us of a Northern European persuasion don't use spice? If so – how wrong you are! English mustard – that'll blow the cobwebs off your tongue and a beef sarnie or Yorkie Pud just ain't right without it. Never mind that a cheese sauce greatly benefits from powdered English mustard….and piccalilli would just be some anaemic ghost of a vinegary mess without it. And then there's the horseradish….once again – a firm friend of beef and other robust dishes. Our wild garlic is second to none and in late spring brings the flowers and the leaves to savoury dishes and salads (fab in a risotto). Bay leaves – in most people's gardens. Garden mint -just try stopping is growing! And fab in a Pimms. We're a pretty spicy crowd if you get to know us! xx

  13. smoked paprika
    cinnamon
    turmeric
    clove
    curry
    black pepper
    garlic
    IN THAT PARTICULAR ORDER
    GREETINGS FROM GREECE!!!!
