This Makes Anything Better

In this video, I’m building a fancy pantry for my wife (and my kid and me) to hold our food. And since I can’t keep anything simple these days, I had to overcomplicate it and make things interesting. I also had fun figuring out how to use plywood, while doing as little as possible to conceal that it’s in fact plywood. Sounds a little confusing, just watch the video and you’ll see what ‘m talking about. Why are you even reading this in the first place?

  1. I'm pretty sure that drawer boxes are the only occasion in woodworking where not having enough is better than having too much. It's a beautiful piece and the pain staking attention to detail really does pay off, even if there is plywood behind the door.

  2. It is exquisite! And I love the builder's angst in the commentary. Please, never change.

  3. To show the passage of time, use a banana for [time] scale.
Make sure to put the same banana in the shot of each step, we can watch the banana ripen.

  4. "stick to painting your toe nails girls?" jesus… this is what happens when you let the middle school bully have a computer… it's misogynist, homophobic, and ignorant all at once….

  5. Yes .. Its overly complicated but I like it… So will she… But it would look good in my bedroom if she doesn't….????????

  6. Man that plumb colored shirt would go great with my plumb colored pants and shoes.

  7. If you can explain something by explaining why your not going to explain what your explaining, does an angle lose its wings and die?

  8. finally! i think i’ve checked your page every day since your last video. awesome job!

  9. you thought you could slip that panstry line in the end and we wouldnt notice didnt you lol

  10. Love the utilitarian styles – I, too, frequently leave hidden edges unfinished (unbanded in this case). So, I choose to believe that makes you brilliant!

I also empathized strongly with those cuts around the door sizing. I call those “money cuts” (the ones where you earn your money), because even when they are straight forward technically, the stakes and stress are real, and small errors jeopardize lots of preceding work. Conversation with my wife usually goes something like this: “did you get a lot done?”… “no, but I made two money cuts that came out good (great, if I’m lucky) , so it was a good day!”.

Finally, I also enjoy the conversation about staging a LOT. When I’m in an important project, those decisions are what I fall asleep to, and wake up with. It’s a joyous quest to find the best way to perform, and intrinsic to what a psychiatrist friend called a ”positive obsession”…woodworking!

Thanks for all you do, and Keep up the great work!

  11. I can’t put my finger on a single thing but the culmination of the beautiful piece, the introspective commentary and showing how you work through a piece; this is the best video I’ve seen in awhile. Thanks for making this!
