Practice the right way from the very beginning and you will never need training wheels.
I like it. (So many ways to chop a mortise!)
Lol so true
Thanks Rex that is a great tip!
For $1200, my domino can do that in a split second so I can go churn butter and slaughter a chicken for lunch.
I like to start in the middle of the mortise. Light taps when both ends done I clean out the waste. Then I start heavy hitting on my pig sticker.
Yeah, as long as you can drill straight down without a press/jig/drill block
Given that there is a specific drill created eons ago specifically to drill out mortises makes me think that Rex might actually be wrong on this one
I often get my self stuck because I can’t do something “the proper way“ especially when it is a new skill or I just suck at it.
I tried a single hole, but I prefer two holes.
I like how you completely blew out the edge lmao
classic hare vs mortise story.
😂😂😂
No Rex, no…
“ThEy’Re AlL GoNnA LaUgH aT yOu!!!”
A bit in line with your Furniture Forensics series—I’ve noticed on a couple of the old four-panel doors around my house with a “single hole” technique, where there’s one hole slightly wider than the mortise (about an 1/8th bigger for at 5/8 tennon), drilled in the center. I’ve never tried it myself, but it’s interesting to see what advantage it might have offered in terms of speed when cutting mortises in an industrial setting. (For reference, the house is circa 1840.
I bore it first; it goes much faster.
I made 4 big 1.5×3” mortises in some 3×3” lumber and after trying the first one without drilling it out first I quickly decided to drill out the rest lol. However I definitely have found that just using the chisel on smaller mortises tends to be quicker over all and less likely to result in mistakes
We are laughing w u lol
What do I do if the two sides go outwards?
