Woman Shares Unfiltered Reality of Tiny House Living + Finances & Parking Challenges

Stacie shares her experience with tiny house living, including some important lessons learned about designing, financing, and finding a parking spot for a tiny house, all from the perspective of a former apartment dweller in the city who made the leap to move to a tiny home in a rural mobile home park.

You can follow and find out more about Stacie’s tiny home and work here:

Stacie had her home custom-built and was able to pay a deposit and obtain a line of credit to cover the remainder of the cost. In the video, she suggests saving in advance if possible, and she also mentions chattel loans, builder financing, and financing from the previous owner as other financial loan options to explore (since many lending institutions and banks might not issue a conventional mortgage for a tiny house on wheels).

For parking, Stacie wanted a legal setup and spent a lot of time following leads for parking her home on private land, but they often fell through because the municipality wouldn’t approve it, or because the landowners changed their minds. At the last minute, she was able to find a spot to park it at a trailer park. Since moving there she’s had the chance to visit neighbouring trailers and wishes she had checked them out as an option before having a tiny home custom-built.

Thanks for watching!

  1. Appreciate the brutal honesty! No joke, though–I don't think I could sleep in a loft like that.

  2. Thank you for sharing! I wouldn't be comfortable sleeping so close to the ceiling and would have a difficult time climbing up and down a ladder so sleeping downstairs would be a must for me. Wonderful tiny home!

  3. Yup. As a Canadian, I gave up on the idea of a tiny home. The only way to comfortably make that happen is to inherit land. Then you build 2 eight by 12 tiny homes on wheels and make them join together by huge bolts. Those are legal movable trailers that need no permits….just insurance. Pour a cement pad, and ta-da. You now have a legal CAMP. Those are allowed. Not as many codes or fancy schmancy government footwork involved.

  4. Thanks for being super honest about the cost of tiny homes. I have been in love with tiny homes for almost 10 years and the main thing I always considered was the fact that I can't build one of my own, and I know the cost of getting a home built, plus the initial out of pocket payments has been my main reason for not pursuing it. Yeah, you have your own house in less time, but as a single person I actually have found it cheaper to rent.

  5. This is a essentially park model trailer. She has mistakenly called it an ADU. An ADU is a secondary unit that sits on the lot with a primary residence.
Because she used the wrong terminology, she may have set herself up for more building restrictions, hassles, costs.

She chose simple finishes, along with a simple design.
    The builder gouged.

    Nice place though.

  6. Super appreciate your honesty here. Too many just gloss over these details. Beautiful home.

  7. @CasaDuroTinyHome Thank you, Stacie for your eloquence, consideration, and kindness.

  8. I am so delighted to know that someone like Stacie live tiny just North of Toronto and I like to find out where it could be. I heard lot of people live Tiny in the States and on the West coast but never knew that it could happen in Ontario. I like to find out how to do it.

  9. You've been through so much. The trauma response is certainly understandable. I hope you are able to rude it out comfortably. I don't have a cancer story. Instead, I was badly injured when a tree fell on me during a tornado (while camping, no less), resulting in many years of recovery. The time of year isn't as trigger but windy days sure are. Any time the trees wave overhead I run. Take good care of yourself.

  10. The loft height is a tough one but I think she did a great job and $80k (USD) now for a home that will be full owned in 7-8 years is a great place to be in at that age.

  11. Excellent video. Beautiful home, eloquent and talented young woman. Regarding the cost of the build, I really think she's done well, I've seen similar priced van builds, and here, in New Zealand, I've seen tinyhome re-sells asking for 150 – 250k NZ$ – crazy prices. She'll own it in less than a third of the time of your average New home buyer.
