  2. I have had pretty decent success with Douglas fir if sealed properly it ages well in the sun and rain and it was pretty cheap when I used it

  3. Alaskan yellow cedar, actually a cypress. Rot resistance of cedar, with almost the hardness of a hardwood.

  4. Very helpful info. Thanks. Any recommendations for the best ways to reduce rot on the bottom of things like bench legs that are in contact with the ground (natural, wood or concrete decks, etc)?

  5. Cypress, Redwood, or Cedar are very common depending on your location. As mentioned, white oak is good. If you can afford it…..and find it……teak or Ipe. IMO the top wood for outdoors is Ipe.

  6. I've heard that the tighter the grain, the longer the wood will last. True? Also, you didn't dig into the badness of treated lumber enough – modern processes don't really impregnate the wood very thoroughly. If you cut it, the cut end needs to be treated, because otherwise it's just bare wood. And the sawdust is all kinds of nasty.

  7. Thermally modified wood is a very good alternative if you have a local source. It's stable, weather, rot, and pest resistant and the thermal process imparts a stain like finish. The process does slightly weaken the wood by around 15 to 20% so if using for structures, check the load bearing stats.

  8. White oak is $$$. I have a lot of yellow pine here and it is amazing for outdoor furniture. I'm wondering about laminate bamboo because I am starting to run into that a lot. Last 2 benches I overhauled the hardware cleaned up the hardwood and used a Brazilian oil stain and they are doing VERY good in the hot Texas sun and rain.

  9. Hi Stumpy. I'm surprised you didn't mention ipe (did I pronounce it right?). Ipe is becoming a popular choice for decks, especially higher end, and seems ideal for outdoor furniture.

  10. Don't make it, buy old grey moss covered furniture, high pressure cleaner will strip the moss and grey wood to reveal the real colour, normally red. When it's dry, a sand and oil will provide a near new finish.

  11. Another option is to use treated lumber for the frame members and something nicer/less toxic for the more visible surfaces.

  12. Has anyone ever heard about outdoor projects made with wood stabilized with Cactus Juice?
I stabilize woods for knife scales, but never considered bird houses, benches, chairs etc. White oak is getting the Adirondack treatment with stabilized wood this summer. Thanks for the heads up on the wood selection. ????

  13. I've used construction lumber (often fir) for outdoor apps. The first key is: no plywood. Second: mechanical fasteners only. Third: paint. Fourth: paint it again, especially the grain ends, and even MORE specially, the grain ends. Paint everything before assembly because rot will intrude at joints unless they are painted before assembly. With pocket holes, I have a small paint brush to get into the bore. It's worth it. I've got some exterior project wood exposed over a decade and still looking good. If you think on it, a house usually has a lot of exposed lumber surfaces, which work fine as long as they're protected.
