Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. G'day Everyone, I hope you are all growing well and harvesting a ton! I have met dozens of you over the past few weeks (out and about) and have thoroughly enjoyed chatting with you about your gardening and life in general – thanks for saying g'day and supporting my vids! Cheers, Mark

  2. Deer in Oregon. I have a 8-9ft fence. Flashing cd's hanging on it. Flags flapping over it. I have coyote decoy's. I have an "ultra-sonic" device. I have spread awful smelling crap over things. Netting on top of things. NONE of this has had ANY EFFECT!!! In the past I shoot them with a pellet rifle and they just stroll over ten ft away and come right back. They are nothing but over sized RATS!!! Vermin that MUST be eliminated. Things I grew this year I now have to buy!! Deer are a terrible disease on our landscape.

  3. Great video! Loved your jumping up to SCARE us for number 5!!! Got me! After planting my cucumbers, a second time, after either birds or squirrels destroyed my first set of seedlings, I placed window screen over the plantings and voila did the trick so they could grow to a size where they were not longer bothered by critters.

  4. How about some life size posters of Mark standing in the garden?? Hey that might even keep the neighbor kids from stealing your fruit!! Haha just kidding ,thakyou for the videos, always enjoy them..

  5. Smell can work on some critters. I've had success in Alberta, Canada, using pelleted chicken manure and blood meal to keep squirrels from digging out my seed and seedling areas. Doesn't smell enough to bother humans.

  6. Thanks for the great video!👍 I know you weren’t really covering it in this video but a lot of companion planting has to do with insect pest mitigation where one plant repels the pests from your crop or works as a sacrifice to save the crop.

We don’t have most of those pests here. My hyper local pests are primarily my dog and toddler, they can do a lot of damage fast 😋. I just finished making a bottomless watering can dipping basin (and made a video) now I need to figure out if I need to keep the two of them out of it 😝

  7. If you're looking for a non-violent alternative to "kill 2 birds with 1 stone" you could use "feed 2 birds with 1 hand" 🙂

  8. Been eagerly waiting for your next video Mark and wasn’t disappointed. Love your compassion, consideration and tolerance for wildlife ( as we all should do ). Thank you for my enjoyable chill time, best wishes from Britain 👍🇬🇧🇦🇺
