Easy Alternative to Arm Knitting – Hand Knit Chunky Scandi Blanket

Do you want to try out arm knitting but don’t have any flag poles lying around? Maybe you don’t have the time to be restrained by wooly hand cuffs for an hour or more?

In this tutorial I will show you an easy, alternative way to arm knit a super chunky throw without the hassle arm knitting can bring. For the purpose of this tutorial I showed a loose knit, so you could see the pattern the chains were creating.

Cost of project : $37CAD / £23GBP [Each skein originally cost $9.99 before tax, but I was able to get my hands on a 50% off coupon making each skein roughly $5. I think this is a really affordable project and well worth the cost as you often see these super chunky throws sell on Etsy for $/£ 100’s].

Yarn used : 8 skeins of Loop & Threads Biggie 100% acrylic super bulky yarn. [You can use any chunky knit yarn or wool].

Size of blanket : 20 by 40 stitches, which works out to measure around 1.5 by 2 meters.

How long did this project take : 1 hour [The great thing about using this method is that you’re able to leave and revisit your project when it suits you].

  1. Thank you so much for your amazing tutorial! Cant wait to make my own. Just wonder, can the blanket be washed? Thank you

  2. This is the best video on arm knitting, my blanket came out big and beautiful, other videos got me a thin throw with 4kg of yarn! Only thing is the fast forwarding is waaay too fast for my likings, otherwise great job and thank you for sharing!!!!

  3. The best and easiest directions to follow! I have made 7 blankets using the directions and they all turned out beautiful! The blankets were gifts and everyone absolutely loved them! Thank you!

  4. It’s very hard to find the super chunky yarn!! I cant afford merino wool and wood prefer not to have to dry clean. Anyone know where to get the super chunky for a reasonable price

  5. I really want to make one like that but I have 100% acrilic chunky boho yarn. Yours is 21 yards but mine is 31. Also got it from Michaels. I have only 3 of such and three different colours. How many I actually would need? I don't wanna start and having not enough to finish same day..

  6. This was absolutely perfect! Super easy to follow, and so fun and satisfying to make. I made my first blanket ever and it's gorgeous. My nieces are going to love their Christmas presents and my husband wants me to make one for us.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge & time!

  7. I really want to make one of these for my arm chair, but have no idea where to get the wool or how much to buy x

  8. Love this! I want to try this but never have knitted anything before- am I able to make the knots/holes smaller or closer together to take away the patches of holes at the end, or will that mess up the blanket? Hope that made sense lol. I just love the look of the closely knit blanket without the holes

  9. I figured since you've had this blanket a while now I could check in to see how the shedding on it has been and if it's worn well? I'm looking for an affordable yarn to buy for these blankets and it's so hard to decide because I'm worried I'll buy the wrong product and it'll end up being a mess for the person buying the blanket off of me.

  10. Oh my goodness! What fun this pattern is! I am currently making my very first hand knitted blanket! Great video Oh So Hygge, I can not thank you enough for sharing!!
