Save Money Growing Your Own Lettuce

The long version of this video https://youtu.be/CX54RT0Jz0g was made during the height of lettuce shortages here in Oz in June 2022 when a small head of iceberg lettuce cost $12 AU!

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. This short is taken from the long version https://youtu.be/CX54RT0Jz0g back in June 2022 when lettuce prices here in Oz went crazy! Don't think it won't happen again… Insulate yourself by getting into growing some of your own fruit and veg. Cheers 🙂

  2. the average citizen is the reason for all the trouble in the world as the government does nothing at all apart from creating fears, while little people beLIEve in those fears and act accordingly. We must live on our own land, grow our own food and stop trusting the fear mongering (non-existing inflation is part of it).

  3. I started using the Kratky method for hydroponics so I could have lettuce year round and I'm so happy with the results. It's simple and, while there was some upfront cost (net pots, masterblend), it's not expensive. When lettuce got ridiculously priced here not that long ago I decided there was no way I was gonna be dependent upon the market for such a low fuss veggie

  4. I started some indoors under grow lights in the middle of winter. They are still going 6 mos later! I have had so many great salads for the price of a seed or two!

  5. I recently harvested my potatoes and even though I didn't get a huge harvest, they were still delicious. I made potatoes O'Brien last night. They were better than the store bought potatoes, I made two different types. The home grown were actually more flavorful than the store bought potatoes. I'll be planting more potatoes if they will handle the heat this time of year.

  6. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! $12 for a head of lettuce down under! Damn! And I thought groceries were high here in the states.

  7. Most people are such slaves to the grind they have no time or know how to do a garden.

  8. I do this as well for all the summer time food it does save money however in my climate in the states my grow season is short ????

  9. It's not governments fault. It's corporations fault due to greed!

  10. Thanks again, Mark. I'm slowly adding to my outdoor grocery store, each day or so. BUT, this year, I'm doing things a little different. Rather than spreading stuff everywhere. I ask myself- self, will the hose reach, will it get blistered in the afternoon sun, and can I maintain it here? If I'm happy with my answers to myself, I plant something in that spot.

  11. You keep inspiring me to grow my food since beginning of plandemic ! Thanks Mark
