Restored RVs for years. Now makes sturdiest off-grid camper

After renovating over 400 Airstreams and living for a decade in boats and vehicles Matthew and Joanna Hofmann created their Living Vehicle: a modern mobile home meant for year-round living in extreme weather (-4°F to 120°F) and equipped to go off-grid for long periods. They started with a well-insulated aluminum shell with everything tucked inside (to prevent pipes from freezing in the winter). It’s designed to be self-sufficient with a large bank of rooftop solar, a heat pump/mini-split AC, and still evolving water capture tech that extracts humidity from the air.

“When we came up with the name Living Vehicle it was two-fold,” explains Joanna, “one, it’s designed for full-time living compared to an RV which is recreational, but also, it’s something that was able to sustain life so being able to create water, for instance, creating your own energy”.

How to Make this Restored Machine even more Awesome with an Epic Control Box?

Many of you requested a video of a vintage style control box for my drill press, so here it is. it was a lot of work in both designing and making it. Probably a bit over the top but it was fun to make with a few cool elements to it. I’d love to know if you thought it was worth the effort or should I have made something more simple and moved on to another project?

Even though I worked out the rpm’s for all four belt positions I doubt it will ever move off the second pulley as it gives me a wide range of 200-2100 rpm.

He restored ancient cave village inside mountain on his own

With 10 abandoned caves in the Bardenas Reales, or badlands, of Navarre, Spain, Ruben Mendi wired, plumbed, floored and painted them and turned them into naturally heated and cooled housing. Today, he rents them out to visitors, but back in 1850, during the “cave housing boom,” these were affordable, self-dug, off-grid homes for the residents of Valtierra.

Mendi explains that the land was owned by the town, and as long as one was willing to dig, one could excavate themselves a home. Since these were mostly farms, or day laborers, the work was done in spare time, so it could take a year to dig a starter home: kitchen plus bedroom. As the family grew, new rooms were dug out. The naturally-insulated mountainside keeps the caves at a comfortable temperature year round.

The highly compacted mountain (due to its millions of years of existence) guarantees the safety of the caves. A geologist who did a risk assessment on the structures said that an 8.0 earthquake would knock down the local homes, but the caves would remain standing.

Mendi showed us one of the smaller starter homes – just a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom -, as well as the extra large “Palomar” (“Pigeon House”). Palomar was built in 1880 by a local man named Cenón Urbeneta, who spent all of his life digging the 250-square-meter (2690 square feet) cave home.
