  1. You should do an unlimited budget but each get what they consider to be the best quality essentials ????

  2. Never ever buy sets. Knife, pots or anything of the sort. The manufacturer is, at best, bundling a bunch of stuff they can't sell with the one or two pieces you will actually use and then overcharging you. But usually you're getting nothing but pieces that won't sell individually at an inflated price.

If you really only have $100 to setup a kitchen get a basic chef's knife, it can do every job you need to do, like a Victorinox Fibrox which if you look around and find a restaurant supply store can be had for $30 ish. Then get a single restaurant grade stainless steel skillet or a cheap cast iron, which again will cost you around $30. You can get 1/4 sheet pans for around $10. Get cheap plastic cutting boards for way under $10 (the flexible ones let you avoid needing bench scrapers and prep bowls until you have more cash as well). A pair of tongs and a spatula will may eat up the rest of your budget. If you have anything left over go to a thrift shop and find a cheap pot to boil water and things like that.

  3. Ikea has some good plastic utensils. One of my favourite, I like to call the "food shovel". You can use them as a spatula but it is also good for scooping fat bastard sized portions, as it does curve some, but has a mostly flat part too. You can flip an egg that's a little struck with it.

I just looked on their website, and sadly I don't think they make that line anymore. A real shame. Luckily, I have two food shovels and I will be taking them with me to my grave.

  4. Tbh I use 2 items like 90% of my cooking. Its my panini grill and chopsticks. And like kush I use old packaging to know how much ml I need. So a only £100 or £50 challenge, and only use what you bougth. (No oven or stove)

  5. i have a meat cleaver made in Thailand i bought it for 1 Swedish krona in a flea market

  6. Maybe I missed it .. Did they say why they chose wood/bamboo rather than an acrylic cutting board?

  7. I couldn't live without my triblade/mini blender wand, I use the mini blender all the time – hummus, baba ganoush, curry pastes, and the stick blender for soups and mayo – it's a godsend. I do have a full sized food processor somewhere but I haven't used it for years.

  8. This has been fascinating, and a bit of validation. I moved to the UK a couple of years ago and started my kitchen from scratch. Made many of the same choices as Ben & Kush (altho I'd brought my French corkscrew with me from Canada – we're not animals) and a couple of purchases I wish I'd made – love the balti pans. Agree with the other commenters that it would be interesting to see the chefs' starter ingredient pantries.

  9. Balti dishes are brilliant!!! – Bought a load in a second hand shop – love em!!
