How To: Adjust the Beater to Bowl Clearance on KitchenAid Stand Mixers

If your KitchenAid¼ stand mixer isn’t reaching all the ingredients in the bottom of the bowl, or your flat beater is scraping the bottom, these are clues that the beater to bowl clearance needs to be adjusted. To get the correct clearance, use this time-honored method we call “The Dime Test.”

A dime is one sixteenth of an inch in thickness: the ideal clearance height from beater to bowl. This provides us a visual aid. Attach a flat beater to your mixer and drop the dime into a bowl.

If the dime does not move, then the beater is too high. If the dime moves around continuously, the beater is too low. If the dime is traveling around the bowl, moving about a quarter to a half an inch with each pass of the beater, that means the beater to bowl clearance is correct.

To make the adjustment, raise your stand mixer’s tilt-head. In the hinge where the head and the body of the mixer connect, there will be a large screw. Turn it a quarter turn to the right to lower the beater, or to the left to raise it. On bowl-lift stand mixer models, this screw can be found on the stand mixer’s body behind where the bowl sits, in between the locking arms.

We all have some everyday habits that are actually really dangerous to our health. For your own safety, and the safety of your family, you’d better stop doing these 10 things that seem good by mistake and follow some simple rules instead.
When you were a kid, your parents probably taught you to immediately brush your teeth after meals, not to sit in front of the computer screen for too long, and to never stand near the microwave when it’s cooking something. Well, it turns out, you probably should’ve given up some of these habits a long time ago.
Tooth enamel is the most solid part of the human body, but it becomes softer under acidic conditions, like after eating fruit or some dairy products. If you brush your teeth right after a meal, you can damage them by removing the enamel. Obviously, your eyes do get tired after staring at a computer screen for a long time. But being tired isn’t the reason why your vision might worsen. Microwave ovens aren’t as dangerous as many people think. In fact, this appliance is made in such a way that the electromagnetic radiation it produces can’t get out of its confines.
The human body is amazingly self-sufficient, doing for itself tons of stuff so that you don’t have to, and that includes cleaning ears. Cleaning out your nose can lead to some serious problems because you can open it up to outside bacteria.
Not all kinds of food really need to be washed before cooking. For instance, red meat and poultry should never be put under water.
For a long time, people thought that sitting with their legs crossed was a sure-fire way to develop varicose veins. But recent studies show that it doesn’t lead to this condition at all.

SUMMARY
-When you clean your ears yourself, you end up doing more harm than good. When you intrude into the ear canal, you cause an increased production of earwax. When pushed down, it may block the canal, which, in turn, can lead to a temporary loss of hearing.
-Unlike X-rays or tanning beds, microwaves don’t produce chemicals or radiation known to damage DNA and cause genetic mutations.
-If the toilet lid is left open, little particles of the “stuff” you left in the bowl get sprayed up to 6 feet when you flush, sending bacteria all over the place
-You should bake or boil meat without washing it beforehand. This way, the high temperatures will kill those harmful bacteria.
-To get rid of everything inside, you can blow your nose carefully or rinse it out with saline solution. Cleaning out your nose can lead to some serious problems because you can open it up to outside bacteria.
-Limescale is nothing but built-up calcium and magnesium carbonate. A lot of heartburn medicines are actually based on these chemicals, and people take them just fine.
-If you brush your teeth right after a meal, you can damage them by removing the enamel. Do it 30-60 minutes after a meal instead.
-Recent studies show that crossing your legs doesn’t actually lead to developing varicose veins.
-Being tired isn’t the reason why your vision might worsen. Use a monitor with the right level of brightness, take breaks, and blink more often so that your eyes don’t dry out.
-Experts actually recommend keeping your hands at “9-and-3”. This position will allow you to make turns even at high speeds.

Mother’s Day Brunch

Ham & Swiss Puff Pastry Bundles
1 sheet puff pastry dough
1 tbsp olive oil
1 bunch asparagus, trimmed
4 slices ham
4 slices Swiss cheese
1 egg
1 tbsp water

Dust cutting board well with flour.
Roll out puff pastry and flour well on both sides to prevent dough from sticking.
Cut into four squares; approximately 3.5” by 3.5”.
Lightly coat asparagus in olive oil to prevent burning.
In the centre of each square, layer ham, Swiss and 3-4 asparagus spears.
Bring corners in and press to seal.
In a small bowl whisk egg with water to create eggwash.
Using a pastry brush, brush eggwash over exposed puff pastry.
Bake at 425°F for between 12-15 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
Enjoy!

Sour Cream & Chive Scrambled Eggs
1 tbsp butter OR oil for cooking
3 eggs
2 tbsp sour cream
2 tsp chives, freshly chopped
salt and pepper

In a small bowl whisk eggs and sour cream until smooth.
In a large frying pan melt butter over medium high heat.
Pour in egg mixture and cook, stirring constantly, until scrambled eggs are set; between 2 and 3 minutes.
Season with salt, pepper and chives.
Serve immediately.
Enjoy!

Homemade Whipped Cream
1 cup whipping cream
2-3 tbsp icing sugar
œ tsp vanilla extract

Whisk ingredients until they create stiff peaks. Do not overmix.
Enjoy!

Chicken livers are most widely available liver, sold in most supermarkets and butchers. Find out to cook chicken livers with our step-by-step video.

1. Look for livers that are a deep dark pink colour and shiny with moisture. Avoid any that are brown or grey. They should be firm – if livers feel pasty or shapeless, they are past their best.

2. To prepare livers, use kitchen scissors or tip of a small sharp knife to trim off and discard any blood vessels, membranes, fat and tough sinew. The livers can be left whole or roughly chopped for sautéing.

3. Heat a frying pan over a high heat and drizzle in a little oil. Add livers and season with pepper and salt.

4. Fry chicken livers for about 3-5min or until they turn golden and opaque and are just cooked all way through. Be careful not to overcook livers as they’ll turn grainy and dry.

– You can add as many pictures as you like, but this isn’t where the collage story ends. Search the web for fun images or icons you want to add to your collage, save them to you Camera Roll and add them just like you did with photos.
– The trick to making elements appear at the right moment is simple: record a video or add a saved one to your Stories. Pick a sticker, emoji, or whatever element you want to add to it. Tap and hold it until you see a slider bar at the bottom pop up.
– The portrait mode in Stories is called Focus. You can find it swiping through the different modes at the bottom of the screen. Now focus on your subject, and the rest will be blurred in the best traditions of DSLR cameras.
– Enable “Screen Recording” in your phone’s Control Center, and you’ll be able to record whatever’s playing on your phone. And once you have the video in your Library, you can easily share it in Stories.
– Why don’t you add some glow to your Emojis to make them stand out? To do that, simply open the Text tool in your Stories and pick the Neon font.
– Take a photo in Stories or choose one from your Library, then open the Pen tool, pick any color you like and tap and hold on the screen to fill it all with one color. Now, pick the Eraser tool and draw whatever you want on your image.
– Open the profile you want to share a post from. Pick the photo you like, tap and hold it. Once everything else but the picture becomes blurred, make a screen shot and share it in your Stories.
– Hashtags in Stories can look quite annoying. So add up to 10 hashtags to your Story and then make them way smaller than they originally were.
– Question stickers sure add interactivity to the Instagram world. People use them to ask for opinions, recommendations, and what not.
– Open Stories, take a random picture or choose one from your library, type your message, then tap on it and pick “Select All” to define what you’ll be working with. Now, in the color palette that pops up, press and hold on any color you like.

Spinal strain, the risk of cardiovascular diseases, the development of varicose veins, obesity and early aging are just some of the risks you are facing.

– In most cases, tennis ball bombs and other homemade explosives are found before, during, or right after the fireworks season.
– The problem is, some homemade bombs disguised as harmless tennis balls are left lying around on the ground. People light them, the so-called firework doesn’t react, and so they think it’s a dud.
– This turns tennis balls into time bombs for curious dogs and small children. Dogs love tennis balls. Upon seeing one, your pet is likely to snatch it and bring it to you. Throwing such a toy for your dog to fetch can have dire consequences.
– If such a thing goes off in somebody’s hand, the chances are high that this person will lose their limb. Imagine if it’s a little child eager to explore their surroundings.
– Try not to pick them up, and forbid your kid or your dog from playing with them. Usually, you can easily identify a tennis ball bomb. It’s typically a real ball wrapped in some duct tape.
– If you suspect that you’ve found a homemade tennis ball firework, don’t touch it. Stay a safe distance away from this object.
– Unfortunately, such fireworks can easily be made at home. On top of that, the internet is swarming with recommendations on how to create firecrackers on your own. These recipes are often incorrect and unsafe.
– In 2017 alone, almost 13,000 Americans ended up in their local ER after firework accidents. 8 more people lost their lives. Most of these deaths happened when something went terribly wrong while setting off homemade fireworks.
– It’s vital to make children and teenagers aware that their pyrotechnic activity can cost them their health and their life. What’s more, it can lead to injuries for other people, small kids, and animals.

– You can cook an egg “inside out” (meaning that when you peel it, you’ll see the yolk encircling the white) using a pair of stockings and some sticky tape.
– The Internet recommends helping your greens to remain fresh for several days by tying them in a bundle, putting them in water, and covering them with a plastic bag.

1 medium onion, finely diced
2 carrots, finely diced
1 red bell pepper, finely diced
1 yellow bell pepper, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
œ jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1 bag brown lentils
1 can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
4 cups vegetable broth
1 28oz can diced tomatoes
1 28oz can crushed tomatoes
2 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp ground cumin
salt and pepper
fresh cilantro, finely chopped
Combine all of the ingredients in your slow cooker. Turn it on High and allow it to cook for 3-4 hours or until lentils are completely tender.
Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Freeze for up to 4 months

4 zucchini
1 tbsp oil
1 yellow onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1lb cremini mushrooms, finely diced
œ cup breadcrumbs
Ÿ cup parmesan cheese, freshly grated
1 egg
salt and pepper
fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 cup tomato sauce
Cut zucchini in half and remove the seeds with a spoon. Set seeds aside. Arrange zucchini halves in a large baking dish and season with salt and pepper.
In a large frying pan heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté for 3-4 min or until it begins to soften. Add garlic and sauté for an additional 30 seconds.
Add mushrooms and cook for 5-7 min.
Transfer mushroom mixture to a bowl and allow it to cool slightly. Once it’s cool, add breadcrumbs, Âœ cup parmesan cheese, egg, salt, pepper and parsley. Mix well.
Fill each zucchini half with the mushroom mixture. Top each with 2 tbsp of tomato sauce. Bake at 400°F for 15-20 min. Top with the remaining parmesan cheese and broil for 2-3 minutes.
Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for 4 days

1 yellow onion, finely diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup quinoa
2 cups vegetable broth
2 cups baby spinach, finely chopped
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
salt and pepper
In a large saucepan heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté for 3-4 min. Add garlic and sauté for an additional 30 seconds. Add quinoa and broth. Bring the mixture to a boil. turn heat to low, cover and simmer for 15 min. add tomatoes, spinach, salt and pepper. Turn off the heat, cover again and allow quinoa to sit for an additional 5 minutes or until the spinach is wilted. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days

2 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
2 red bell peppers, diced
1 red onion, diced
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp garlic powder
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large bowl toss sweet potatoes, peppers and onion with oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Transfer them to a baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 min or until sweet potatoes are completely tender. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days

œ cup red onion, finely diced
1 red bell pepper, finely diced
1 green bell pepper, finely diced
1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1 can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can green beans (or steam your own)
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tsp Dijon mustard
salt and pepper
In a large bowl combine red onion, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, chickpeas, kidney beans and green beans. In a small bowl whisk olive oil, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper. Toss well.
Store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Shake well before eating

For the Blueberry Vanilla Applesauce:
8-10 apples, cored and quartered
2 cups blueberries
œ cup apple juice or cider
1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Yogurt Parfaits:
2œ cups vanilla yogurt
1Œ cup granola
In a Dutch oven or large soup pot combine all of the ingredients. Make sure the vanilla bean is submerged. Bring mixture to a boil and then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 60 to 75 min. Stir mixture often. Remove pot from heat, remove vanilla bean and puree using an immersion blender.
Allow applesauce to cool completely before packaging. It can be stored for up to a week in the refrigerator or 6 months in the freezer.
Layer vanilla yogurt, applesauce and granola in jars. Store for up to 5 days in the refrigerator

Œ cup fresh tarragon
Œ cup chives
Œ cup fresh dill
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
œ cup feta cheese, crumbled
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
salt and pepper
Combine all of the herbs and the olive oil in the bowl of a food processor. Blend until it begins to become smooth. Add lemon juice, feta cheese and Greek yogurt. Blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Store in the fridge for 4-5 days

If you’re on an overnight flight, you might have been looking forward to a gorgeous, clear view of the stars! That’s the whole reason you booked that window seat, right? But when night falls, you look out your window, and
no stars! They’re obviously still there
so what’s going on here?? Well, there are a few reasons!

Do you know, for example, what light pollution is? When you’re flying over a huge city like New York, London, or Tokyo, the stars have to compete with all of those artificial lights from the cities. It might seem crazy to think that man-made lights will block out the light of millions of stars, but the stars are much further away than those glowing city lights below!

SUMMARY:
– No matter how dim the lights might get as they’re turned down around bedtime, there are enough of them to make it difficult to see the stars – which, keep in mind, are still quite a few miles away!
– A lot of light pollution, like the kind you’ll get flying over a big city, can cause skyglow. Even if you aren’t flying directly over it, you can still see a big city to the left or right of you from a plane.
– The moon still blocks the light of some stars when you’re stargazing from Earth.
– It might feel like you’re much closer to the stars while up in your airplane, but in terms of miles and light-years, you aren’t really that much closer.
– Atmospheric turbulence is irregular air currents that are mixed around by the wind.
– Turbulence may bring in clouds, even on a clear night, which will block your view of the stars.
– The retina is the part of your eye that processes light. If you have any pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, or have had any head trauma, your retinas may not work properly, and you may not be able to see the stars.
– It takes us 10-20 minutes for our eyes to acclimate to the dark. So if you’re trying to see the stars from your plane and can’t, don’t give up too quickly!
– The windows of an airplane are oddly shaped and on the small side, only reaching from about shoulder to elbow; not ideal for stargazing.
– Assuming that it’s a clear night, one option is to cover your head and sides of your face with your travel blanket. The goal here is to block out all the unnatural light from inside the cabin.
– You could also try asking the flight attendants if they could shut off the cabin lights for a minute or two.
– If you’re flying over an area with no skyglow or light pollution, and the lights are off in the cabin, you should be able to see some stars once your eyes adjust.
– If you’re doing some nighttime flying over Idaho, Utah, Colorado, or British Columbia, you just might be in for the sight of a lifetime! These parts of the U.S. are homes to many protected national parks and nature reserves, so there’s no danger of light pollution or skyglow.
