DIY Drainage – French Drains On A Budget!

We had big problems with mould and mildew forming on the inside of our garage / store room, as damp was tracking through from the outside to the inside due to there either being no damp proof course in the walls (which is what I suspect is the case) or if there is a DPC, it was being compromised by a concrete driveway and path at DPC level on the outside. So join me for a video full of drainage solutions on a very tight budget!

  2. Wow! I'm impressed with the way you did that job. You're the Best! Regards from Canada ????????

  3. I think changing out to the metal grate made it look a lot better. Great stuff!

  4. Dude I love these house improvement videos so much, like they are just so interesting to watch.

  5. What an inspiring project. Absolutely love how you have sensibly and effectively adapted what you have to hand.

  6. Waste not want not. I use recycled, re purposed materials all the time. And Yes, I have the pile of 'stuff' hidden away for when I need it. All the little savings add up. Great job Keith.

  7. Similar comment as @benjaminreinhardt259, with one recommendation. Use (2) short radius 45 degree elbows to feed the ECCO trench. You could just remove the piece of black grate for the piping. The 45's will allow for better flow than one 90.

  8. Great video. I've been scared to do mine for so long, and you've given me confidence to at least try it!

  9. Keith, you are just handier than a pocket on a shirt. Is there any job that you won't take on? I am amazed by how inventive you are.

  10. great video, thank you. quite enjoyed your homemade end caps for those drainage channels, and agree that something as simple as gifting yourself the time to clean and reuse some gravel can be very therapeutic

  11. Nice job again Keith. Personally, I like woodworking a lot more but it is nice to see how you solve the problems that the earlier owners have created!

  12. so the drains are just going to catch all the water and dump it underneath your slab because you drilled wholes on the channel drains lol? wouldnt the soil start to get soft and cause you foundation issues in the future because its just dumping all the water into the soil?

  13. 1:55, the hose adaptor on the cut off saw is to suppress the dust levels when cutting abrasive materials such as concrete bricks etc

  14. Why using a battery tool when you have to be hooked up to water? It makes no sense.

  15. It's not over the top to reuse your gravel, it totally makes sense! If you'd bought all new gravel, you'd still have had to dispose of the old gravel somehow, which would still take time & probably money. And I can definitely relate to you getting carried away and patching up all of the footings 🙂

  16. I've got a similar problem at my workshop, where ground level outside is more or less at the dpc level. along one side of the building it was fairly easy to sort, just removing a few inches of soil. on the other side though, the building is only 6 inches away from the boundary wall, so there's no chance of me ever getting in there to do anything about it. the ground is mostly made from blobs of mortar that were dropped when the place was built. not entirely sure yet, but i'm thinking i might just put a trough that runs the length of the wall at the same height as the top of the boundary wall, so it catches all rainwater that comes down the wall and carries it away.

  17. Thanks for video, Keith. A very neat and thorough solution. Also, good call with the last minute change the drain across the path.
