When you just can't pretend anymore…

We often just do what we’ve always done when it comes to the holidays…but is it effective? Are you happier because of the events and traditions? Do your kids actually want the toys you’re giving them? Or is there a better way…I discuss this with Dr. John Delony today, a mental health and anxiety expert.

  1. Thank you so much for watching! 2. For me, Christmas is not super busy, expensive or stressful. But I did realize a few years back that on Christmas I had expectations that I would enjoy being with my side of the family. And in reality there are certain people who are harder to love, certain people with whom I used to be closer, and there is just a lot of reason for disappointment. So I try to keep that in mind going forward: My expectations and limitations regarding my family.

  3. When my son was growing up, I gave him an allowance and budget for school clothes, and gifts and let him choose what he wanted, while I maintained a veto power I rarely used. At times, Christmas, birthdays and sometimes just because I'd get him a small surprise. He loved making his own choices and now as an adult he's very good at managing his money.

  4. I am Santa. My children are adults and they still love that Santa is alive in our home. They know as long as I’m alive, Santa will bring them a gift. It’s our own little family tradition. My husband is from Mexico and they celebrate the day of Epiphany when the 3 Kings visited Jesus. The 3 Kings always leave them a few small gifts based on what they need rather than want. They might get a blanket, socks, a gratitude journal and pen.

  5. Mom struggled financially, and agonized over Christmas. I love the idea of experiences over expensive gifts. I remember more going places with my mom than I do the stuff she bought for us.

  6. I love this, I have done this for a long long time. It takes some time. I have not gone to party’s for many many years, I don’t like them and it is not my thing. You don’t have to answer every question, and hummm. Can be the answer. And return the answer in a a question back to them…. I don’t like to play the “game”. It is so very freeing!!

  7. I as a grandparent, have a little different perspective. Some of my grandchildren's grandparents on the other side of the family spend 3-4 times more on them than my husband and I do. The grandkids don't say anything, but I know they have to notice. Plus my grandkids need absolutely NOTHING!

  8. I had a very sheltered upbringing. We lived about 20 miles from the closest town, rode the bus to school, and all that "down in the boondocks" that went with it. I don't remember when I learned there was no Santa Claus. I do remember how devastated I was when I found out. I never wanted my kids to know that feeling for something fake.

  9. We don't really do Santa, its always been about who's in need that we can help. Our kids get very few gift, because they don't need or really want more things, but we adopt a family or two and shop for them as a family. It's such a blessing.

  10. Minimal Mom Dawn: You mentioned another video with Dr. John Delony about debt. Could you provide the link to that video please?

  11. I want to cancel the $11 membership, but you are not responding to help me do that. I have contacted you several time private but since ne response this will have to be. As I stated before I love your videos and will join again when I can. And you said you can cancel at any time, but I am not finding that true. Help

  12. I absolutely agree with Dr. Delony's point. I struggled to make sure I got straight A's all through school and in retrospect, yes, it was totally approval-seeking and trying to "keep the peace" in a very stressful family.

  13. Wow ,I needed to hear this , I’m not giving any gifts to anyone for Christmas this year , it’s been hard swimming up stream , not from my family but from my own guilt !

  14. I am a counter too!!! I never met anyone that counts as much as I do!! LOL When I was a kid I almost drove my mom crazy because I was counting every bite I took and how many times I chewed it.

  15. Another great video from both of you! It really struck me to hear John say it's better to feel guilt than resentment. I just declined a Christmas social outing and I felt guilty, but not resentment for being over scheduled. Great advice about talking to your kids about comparison with their friends after Christmas. Thanks for another really helpful video!!!

  16. I'm going to create memories, not junk! I LOVE the examples that John gave, the mud balls, snow balls, pools etc! YES memories!

  17. You are amazing, sharing such great information, your soul is so kind and I appreciate all your content.
