Your wilting plant can be spared and revitalized with a little help.

Step 1: Identify the cause
Lift the plant from the pot to check the root system. The roots should be light colored; if not, they are rotting.

Step 2: Fix what is causing the problem
Cut out the rotten parts of the roots and a half inch into the good part of the root using scissors or a knife.

Step 3: Check for insects
Check for insects. If they are present, use a plant insecticide according to the directions.

Step 4: Replant into a new pot
Add about two inches of potting soil into a new pot and put in the plant, adding more potting soil around the plant to stabilize it. Keep adding soil until it’s an inch from the top of the pot.

Tip
Your new pot should be a little smaller than the previous one.

Step 5: Water the plant
Add enough water that the pot overflows slightly.

Classic Cheesecake
Makes 1 (9-inch) cheesecake

Ingredients:
10 to 12 graham crackers, crushed (about 2 cups)
¼ cup butter, melted
2 pounds cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
4 eggs

Directions:
1. Make this a day ahead of when you want to eat it!
2. Pre-heat the oven to 325˚ F.
3. Crush the graham crackers into crumbs either by hand or with a food processor, and combine with the melted butter. Press the crumb mixture into the base of a 9-inch springform pan. Refrigerate while you prepare the cheesecake batter.
4. Using the paddle on your stand mixer with low speed, or the regular beaters on a hand mixer on low speed, blend the cream cheese until it is completely smooth with no lumps.
5. When all the lumps in the cream cheese have disappeared, add the sugar and vanilla extract. Blend just to incorporate the ingredients and then add the eggs one at a time. Continue to mix until the eggs have been mixed in, but do not over-beat.
6. Pour the batter into the springform pan with the graham cracker crust. Wrap the bottom of the springform pan in aluminum foil to create a completely waterproof seal. Place the springform pan in a larger baking pan. Fill the larger baking pan with water until it halfway up the sides of the springform pan, creating a water bath.
7. Bake at 325˚ F for one hour. After one hour, the center of the cheesecake should still jiggle when you tap the pan gently. Turn off the oven, and leave the cheesecake in the closed oven for another hour. Then remove the cake from the oven and let it cool to room temperature on your kitchen counter before refrigerating. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours before serving.

Learn how to do the linking paper clips magic trick from Magician Roger “Rogue” Quan in this office magic tricks revealed video from Howcast.

Roger “Rogue” Quan: Hey, Heather do you have any money I can borrow?

Heather: I hope that you’re going to give it back.

Roger: Maybe. Oh, wow! A high roller. You have been to the circus before, right?

Heather: Yes.

Roger: You’ve ever seen the circus where the acrobats actually, they jump off the trapeze? And they..

Heather: Yeah.

Roger: Anyway, we’re going to recreate that with an hundred dollar bill, which will serve as the stage for this little stunt, and two paper clips. What’s going to happen I’m going to pull the bill apart. The paper clip’s going to jump into the air and do, like, ten somersaults and they’re going to link together when they fall down. Would you be impressed?

Heather: I would.

Roger: You would?

Heather: I would.

Roger: All right, let’s do it, drum roll please.

Heather: Woah, they did it!

Roger: They’re linked together. What little circus performers they are, right?

Heather: Yeah, that’s pretty awesome.

Roger: For this next stunt, you’re going to need a bill, any bill will do, and some paper clips. First you’re going to take the bill and you’re going to fold it, I would say three quarters of the way. And then you’re going to fold it half way back almost, like a little bit more than half way. So you have a Z, with the edges sticking out, I would say like, a half inch on both sides.

First, you’re going to take the paper clip, one paper clip, and you’re going to put it in the front of the bill, right inside the crease. So your situation is in the front, and right here.

Second paper clip is going to go toward the back and your second crease. This is the second crease on this side, and on the right and the back until you see the paper clip, that’s the situation. And all you have to do to really start working the illusion, here’s what you need to do. Just pull the edges of the bill in opposite directions, and the paper clips are going to fly in the air and link together.

It’s a really cool stunt. Just like that, it links together. You can tell them that your paper clips actually performed in the circus or whatever patter you have and it’s an amazing little stunt. Have fun with the amazing linking paper clips.

How to Debone a Chicken

How to Debone a Chicken

Watch more Food Preparation Tips, Tricks & Techniques videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/105-How-to-Debone-a-Chicken

If you’re one of those do-it-yourself cooks who loathes all things shrink-wrapped, pre- packaged, and over-handled, this is the task for you.

Step 1: Place chicken
Place the chicken squarely on its back on the cutting board with its legs spread outward.

Step 2: Grasp knife
Grasp the knife in your dominant hand, holding the handle close to the blade with three fingers: your middle, ring, and pinkie. Curl your forefinger around one side of the blade while holding your thumb on the opposite side.

Step 3: Cut joints
Pull the wings out on both sides of the bird, and cut the tips off at the joint.

Step 4: Make first cut
Grab the end of the drumstick and cut between the top of the leg and the breast.

Step 5: Expose joint
Applying downward pressure, continue to score along the skin and meat of the leg—which contains the thigh and drumstick—until the joint is exposed.

Tip
When trimming a chicken, do not attempt to finish the job in one slice—using a series of shallow cuts will maximize your control.

Step 6: Pop joint loose
With your free hand, twist the thigh back until the joint pops loose.

Step 7: Free leg
Free the leg by following with your knife the line of the breast from the tail to beneath the wingtip.

Step 8: Cut length of leg
Cut down the length of leg from the top of the thighbone down.

Step 9: Cut meat away
Stand the leg on end and begin cutting the meat away from the bone. Make a small series of cuts, turning the bone often and pulling the flesh as you go.

Step 10: Continue cutting
Trim around the knee joint and continue cutting along the bone to loosen and free the meat all the way to the end of the drumstick. Set the bone to one side and the meat to another.

Step 11: Turn bird
Turn the bird on its side so the wing is nearest to you.

Step 12: Separate wing
Insert your knife behind the wing joint and cut forward, separating the wing from the body.

Step 13: Free breast
Continue to score forward on a diagonal, freeing the breast from the bone underneath until the entire portion is released.

Step 14: Separate wing
Following the edge of the wing joint, slice through the meat and tendons attaching the wing to the breast and separate the two pieces. Set the wing to one side, with the leg bones, and set the breast meat to the other.

Tip
Use the chicken carcass to make chicken soup stock.

Step 15: Cut as desired
The boneless thighs and breasts are now ready to be sliced, diced, chopped, or stuffed—because this goose is cooked.

Did You Know?
The small bundle of meat between the upper thighs and back is nicknamed the ‘oyster’—some chefs consider it the tastiest part of the chicken.

Watch more How to Make the Most of Your Cellphone videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/316083-How-to-Avoid-Cell-Phone-Scratches

Keep your cell phone looking brand new with this next-to-free protective cover that will last longer than the original.

Step 1: Measure and mark
Measure your screen with the ruler and use the marker to mark the width on the packing tape before you unroll the tape. Then add an inch to your height measurement and mark that on the tape.

Step 2: Cut
Cut the marked piece of tape as straight as possible. Peel it from the roll starting at the top, where the excess tape is marked.

Tip
Hold the tape by the excess inch. This prevents fingerprints and prevents the tape from getting hung up on anything.

Step 3: Soak
Submerge the piece of tape completely in a bowl of water with a few drops of dish soap and soak it for several seconds. Avoid making the water too sudsy.

Step 4: Place on phone
Make sure the tape and your hands are free from debris. Then, put a drop or two of water on your cell phone’s screen and apply the tape, sticky-side down, starting at the bottom. Center the tape on the screen.

Step 5: Squeegee
Remove excess water and air bubbles with the credit card, using it like a squeegee. Push from the bottom to the top. Then blot excess water from the screen with a tissue.

Step 6: Remove excess tape
Carefully cut off the excess tape at the top just below the faceplate surface.

Step 7: Avoid scratching back
Avoid scratching other parts of your cell phone by always placing it in a separate pocket from your keys and loose change, or in a separate compartment in your handbag.

Did You Know?
According to a 2009 poll, 94 percent of Americans under 45 have cell phones.

Although dyeing leather is more of an art than a science, the basic procedure is quite simple.

Step 1: Select a dye
Select a suitable dye, which will be depend on the type of leather you are working with. Alcohol-based dyes add a strong color to leather, but tend to stiffen it. Water-based dyes do not add as strong a color, but they are better at preserving the leather’s natural suppleness.

Step 2: Clean the leather
Clean the leather surface, taking care to remove any coating or dirt present.

Tip
Use a commercially available leather deglazer.

Step 3: Dampen the leather
Spray the leather with water, or dampen it with a moist sponge until it is uniformly wet.

Step 4: Apply the dye
Apply the dye evenly with a clean cloth.

Step 5: Let the leather dry
Allow the leather to dry. As it dries, flex it occasionally to keep it from becoming stiff.

Step 6: Buff the leather
Buff the leather with a soft, clean cloth to remove any excess dye.

Filling in your eyebrows can be kind of tricky so here are some tips on how to do it properly. First, when you’re filling in your brows, you want to examine them and see what shape you’re going to be making. So, I like to say, take a little pencil, line it up at this crease of the nose here; that’s where your brow should start; perfect.

Take this, take it directly through the pupil of the eye; this is about where her brow should peak, so I’m going to make a little mark there. And we’re going to take this, the bottom of her nose to the side of her eye, and that’s where it will end. And so her brows are pretty good; we’re just going to add a little more of a peak over here. Also, once we’re shaping them, you want to make sure they are symmetrical. We’re going to go ahead; you can either use pencil, brow powder, tinted brow gel; there are a lot of options. This one is an Anastasia brow pencil, so we’re going to go ahead and do this.

Basically, what I’m doing is adding little strokes as if you’re placing hairs where there aren’t enough. There we go; I’m just kind of doing these tiny little strokes. You don’t want to think about going back and forth or making a specific shape of the brow; I’m just kind of filling it in as we go. I am making this part a little cleaner over here. We’re going to do this crease up here. Mattie has pretty full brows so we’re not going to be doing too much. We’re just giving a little more shape; it really makes a big difference with the eyes. One thing, even if I have no eye makeup on, I’ll still fill in my brows if I’m going out because it really does make a big difference.

You don’t have to do this but I’m going to go over with a little bit of powder just to show you what it would look like. I’m using kind of a dark brown shade; make sure that you find something that does match your brows. I’d say go either slightly lighter, because when you’re concentrating it, it’s going to come out looking a little bit deeper and you don’t want your brows to be these large objects on your face. So make sure that it’s not too dark. Next, like I was saying, we’re going to take the other end of my brow pencil, it has a little spoolie, and what we’re going to do is brush upwards first; this is just getting the hairs all going in the same direction. And, by brushing, it also blends the pencil or powder or whatever you just put on.

If you don’t have a brow pencil with one of these on the end, you can find some really cheap, clean mascara wands and they’ll do the same thing. Or there are even brow brushes that you can purchase. So now that it’s all going upward, I’m going to take my brush on the top, kind of blend it down so they’re all going the same way. One last thing that you can do to make your brows look nice and clean is actually highlight them. The one that I have is by Anastasia and it has a shimmer end and a matte end; I’m going to use the matte end.

We’re just kind of outlining right around what we just did. And if you don’t have one of these, you can even just use concealer or something that’s slightly lighter than your natural shade because, what we’re going to do once we’re done lining, is blend it out. This just makes your brows look a little cleaner and, if you haven’t gotten a chance to tweeze or get them waxed or threaded in a little while, it kind of hides that.

I know it looks crazy right now. I’m going to get a concealer brush and blend that out. So here we go; just blend it downward and it just cleans up the line that we have. You don’t necessarily have to highlight around the brow but it’s something nice if you want a little more precise look. Kind of blend outwards; you can even do a little bit right here just to clean that up. All right. And that is how to fill in your brows.

How to Keep an Indoor Plant Alive

How to Keep an Indoor Plant Alive

Do plants wilt at the sight of you? With these tips, anyone can keep a houseplant alive – even you!

Step 1:
Pick a plant that’s tough to kill. Hardy varieties include spider, rubber, and snake plants, and pothos, aloe vera, and peace lilies.

Step 2:
Choose a good location. Plants do best in the light and temperature of their native environment. For instance, tropical plants like their surroundings bright and humid, while cacti need sunlight but very little water.

Tip
Put houseplants that thrive on humidity in the bathroom – the dampest room in the house.

Step 3:
Find out your plant’s foot-candle requirement, which is how many candles it would take to light the plant from one foot away. A plant that needs 250 or fewer candles is a low-light plant; one that needs more than 1,000 requires very bright light. If your plant didn’t come with this information, search for it online.

Step 4:
Poke the soil with your finger before watering. If it’s moist, leave it alone. Overwatering is the no. 1 killer of houseplants.

Step 5:
Fertilize a few times between the spring and fall. Low-light plants only require fertilization once or twice a year. Slow-growing plants need less fertilizer, while faster growing varieties need more. Choose a fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Water the soil before fertilizing to prevent fertilizer burn.

Tip
Watering your plants with the water in which you boiled vegetables or water from your fish tank gives them nutrients that help them grow.

Step 6:
Talk or sing to your plants. Some research has indicated this can help them thrive, as does playing certain kinds of music. Indian sitar music works best, followed by classical music. Stay away from heavy metal: Plants exposed to loud rock music died after a few weeks in one famous experiment.

Did You Know?
British media famously lampooned Prince Charles in 1986 after he said in a T.V. interview that it was very important to talk to plants, and that they respond to the human voice.

For a delicious taste of the holidays, try this recipe for fresh chestnuts roasted in the oven.

Step 1: Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Rinse the chestnuts, place them on a towel, and pat them dry.

Step 2: Carve an X
Use the paring knife to make an X on the flat side of each chestnut. This will allow steam to escape and prevent the chestnuts from exploding in the oven. Plus, it will make peeling them easier.

Tip
Make the incision about 1/8-inch deep — just into the flesh of the nut.

Step 3: Bake the chestnuts
Place the chestnuts in a single layer in the shallow baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes, turning them over after 10 minutes.

Step 4: Remove chestnuts to a bowl
Take the chestnuts out of the oven, put them in a bowl lined with a towel, and cover them for 10 minutes.

Step 5: Peel
Peel them while they’re still hot, but cool enough to touch, starting at the slit and pulling the shell and skin away from the nut meat.

Step 6: Serve
Serve them plain or sprinkled with cinnamon, or dip them in melted better.

Did You Know?
Chestnuts have a high water content and very little oil, making them virtually fat free.

Watch more Learn Woodworking videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500377-How-to-Make-a-Box-Joint-Woodworking

Box joint is second only to dovetails, in terms of the amount of glue area you get. And it’s great for, that makes it great for drawers or anything that’s going to get a lot of force put on it.

So, the idea behind box joint, though, is, you can see, is it’s equal parts are taken out of each face of the wood. And so, you get this tabbed, slot design.

So, cutting these is usually done on a table saw or a router, where you’re removing a square chunk each time you make one of these. And the only hard part about it is keeping track of which boards go with which. Because the mating piece is offset by one tooth.

So, keeping track of the pieces is the hard part. Actually cutting it, pretty easy.

And, to do that we have the dado blades. What we do is we’re going to run these pieces of wood through the dado blade and space them out so that they come out evenly.

Now, there’s a trick to doing this and that’s what I’m going to show you here. We’ve added an extra piece of wood here on the fence. It’s going to become our jig to make this joint.

But, the first step in doing this is we have to set the blade height. And, the blade height for cutting out these notches. We want pieces to be sticking out slightly after they are glued up so that we can plane them down. And, in order to do that we have to set the saw blade slightly above the thickness of the wood.

So that’s what I’m doing now. I’m going to raise the blade up and just get it just above, a hair above, the top of this wood. Okay. Now that we’re set.

First step is we don’t even cut the wood, we’re going to start making the jig. And we have to cut a slot in the jig at that height. So, we’ll do that now.

This piece of wood, that we just cut a slot in, is going to become our jig. Now, we’re going to fit this part in here and that’s going to become an index that we’re going to key off of.

So, you can see how it works on this already cut one. And basically, we’re going to be setting of wood against that. And then we move it over every other cut. And, it positions the board in the right place to have the next slot cut.

The first step in cutting is we’ve got to offset that by a thickness, another thickness of wood. And we’ll lock that all down onto, onto the fence. Okay. Now we’re ready to start cutting.

And we can go. And now, we simply just take that, put it on top of the index and run the next one.

Alright. Now we’re ready to cut the mating piece. And there’s only one extra step we have to do. And that is just to offset the piece by that amount of the board’s thickness.

So, we’re putting this spacer in here to just set this board up. And now we can run it, start running through.

Alright. Okay. We’ve done with both pieces. And now they just mate up pretty nicely when you push them together.

So, here’s the finished product. Your joints fit snugly together. There should be slightly proud of the surface that they’re mating with so that you can just come across with a block plane and just shave them down.
